The Personal Effect of Christ’s Sacrifice Hebrews 10:19-25
Hebrews 10:19-25 19 Therefore, brethren, having boldness to enter the Holiest by the blood of Jesus, 20 by a new and living way which He consecrated for us, through the veil, that is, His flesh, 21 and having a High Priest over the house of God, 22 let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water. 23 Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful. 24 And let us consider one another in order to stir up love and good works, 25 not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some, but exhorting one another, and so much the more as you see the day approaching.
Setting the Context • Letter written to those tempted to leave service to Christ & return to old law • Writer showed that Christ fulfilled old law • Now have better hope, better priesthood, better law, better promise & better sacrifice • This context shows the result to be seen • Sacrifice of Christ should cause us to give greater effort in service to God & brethren
Salvation Is By Blood of Christ • Scripture repeatedly shows blood of Christ is price for our salvation • 1 Pet. 1:18-20 Redeemed by blood • Eph. 2:1-6 Dead in sin before • Col. 2:13-15 Made alive in Christ • Heb. 9:11-14 Full cleansing by blood • No hope present without Christ’s blood • Must respond to gift with full dedication
Greater Faith Result of Sacrifice • Draw near with true heart in fullness of faith • Hold fast confession of hope & not waver • Rom. 6:1-2 Sin should be banished • Rom. 12:1-2 Sacrificial life in response • Titus 2:11-14 Be zealous of good works • Eph. 5:1-6 Become imitators of God • Sacrifice must have profound effect on us in maintaining faithfulness & avoiding sin
Appreciation for Sacrifice Causes Desire to Exhort in Worship • Focus of all worship together is on Christ • Acts 2:42fEarly saints gathered daily • Acts 5:42Continued after persecution • Acts 20:7fWorship for extended period of time • Do we show love for Christ by seeking less? • Col. 3:16f Teach & admonish in worship • What is our custom (Lk. 4:16 cf. Heb. 10:25)? • Dedicating self to Lord leads us to exhort our brethren through worship together
Effect of Christ’s Sacrifice Must Be Obvious in My Life But it does not change the lives of some
What If We Continue In Sin? 26 For if we sin willfully after that we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remaineth no more a sacrifice for sins, 27 but a certain fearful expectation of judgment, and a fierceness of fire which shall devour the adversaries. 28 A man that hath set at nought Moses law dieth without compassion on the word of two or three witnesses: 29 of how much sorer punishment, think ye, shall he be judged worthy, who hath trodden under foot the Son of God, and hath counted the blood of the covenant wherewith he was sanctified an unholy thing, and hath done despite unto the Spirit of grace? 30 For we know him that said, Vengeance belongeth unto me, I will recompense. And again, The Lord shall judge his people. 31 It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God. --- Heb. 10:26-31 ---
The Choice Is Ours Can be totally changed in individual life & worship with brethren Can remain unchanged in life knowing we will face judgment OR
