  1. UNDERNOURISHMENT • Approximately 17% of the population of countries with low per capita incoms suffers from undernourishment. • Undernourishment causes rickets, blindness and anaemia due to the lack of iron. • Each year, up to half a million children go blind because their diets lack vitamin A, and around three hundred and fifty million have anaemia due to a lack of iron. OVERNOURISHMENT • Approximately 15% of the population of countries with high per capita incomes (32% in the USA) suffers from overnourishment. • Overnourishment causes obesity. • Approximately two thirds of deaths in the United States are related to over-nourishment. The greatest contrast in the world Malnutrition affects millions of people around the world. It can be as a consequence of both insufficient food (undernourishment) and excessive consumption (overnourishment).
