  1. Upgrade Run IIa + DØ France H.Weerts Argonne National Lab. & Michigan State University( emeritus)

  2. Introduction Not given DØ talk for 5 or 6 years Used to give at least one/week There is live after DØ, but how much……. RelearnØ Remarkable occasion: Had to dig through archives, meant bring old email system to life This really has little to do with science, it is simply history. (except how things are accomplished) Amazing how much I forgot…….. Amazing that some things came back and I remembered them. Date: 8-MAR-1998 12:46:55.78 From: SMTP%"melanson@d0sgih.fnal.gov" Subj: Some detector figures on the web You can find the page by clicking on "Detector Pictures" on the "Results" page, or by going directly to http://www-d0.fnal.gov/public/detector/pictures.html Cheers, Harry M Web pages are invaluable: (still maintained by Harry M.)

  3. One of ex-DØ spokes is missing today….. From last Friday: "I'm very sorry to miss this wonderful occasion, but as many of you know I actually prefer touring a deep, dark, and dank hole in the ground………. to giving an after dinner speech." So have a good time. Jerry Blazey Office of High Energy Physics Gerald.Blazey@Science.doe.gov Translation:He is touring Homestake Mine (DUSEL) in South Dakota with Ray Orbach(DoE) today and is 2700ft underground, while we are in Paris. Leave it to you, which one you would prefer…..

  4. Talk outline and plan • Run IIA upgrade activities 1996/7-2001 • DØ France developments and contributions during this time Try to be objective, but it is a personal view Some times items 1) and 2) are interwoven, some times not Try to do it in a historical order

  5. Lehman review March 1997 Upgrade First Lehman review I was involved in as spokes Introduction talk at our baseline review. Why me ?

  6. Lehman review March 1997 Upgrade ? D0 more international ‘84  ‘97

  7. Lehman review March 1997 Upgrade One institution from France so far….

  8. Lehman review March 1997 Upgrade Run I

  9. Lehman review March 1997 Upgrade Run I Run IIa Upgrades: • Momentum measurement • Vertex tagging • Better muon system • Trigger capabilities • Electronics for crossing time ; 2.4msec-> 396 nsec -> 132nsec • Shielding

  10. Lehman review March 1997 Upgrade; what was it?

  11. Upgrade Lehman review March 1997 Not part of Upgrade, but large effort: Upgrade of offline computing with changes to hardware, object oriented approach & first non-FNAL farms Later talk

  12. Lehman review March 1997 Upgrade Request base-lining of project. Upgrade Project was base-lined i.e. construction funds available and start construction in a Jan 1998 review Estimated time: Ready to roll in: Rolled & hooked up: 01 Oct 1999 29 Nov 1999

  13. The Upgrade management Mike Tuts Jim Christenson Hard to find pictures

  14. Lehman review March 1997 Upgrade cost Just before we came to Paris…. Concerns at Lehman review March 1997. Total capital cost: $60,659K in FY95$ Need to be specific a la Tuts (upgrade $39M + Solenoid, Project support, G&A: $21M) Special Slide by J.Christenson HM & HW charged to find missing funds Have identified $1.8M Exploring other sources……. • DoE funding $3M short • Meeting Collider Schedule requires funding earlier then available from DoE • Have secured funds needed for this , but concerned about future years ? Collaborating Institutions have pledged ~$1.9M prefunding for FY97; additional $1M for FY98 Does not work

  15. The approach starts DØ France During November of 1996 several emails start: Date: Tue, 19 Nov 1996 From: Daniel Fournier<Daniel.Fournier@cern.ch> To: Hugh Montgomery <mont> cc: Pierre.Petroff@cern.ch Subject: Re: D0 Meetings etc. Date: Wed, 13 Nov 1996 From: Hugh Montgomery<mont@d0sgi0.fnal.gov> Subject: Do Interest To: aurore.savoy@cern.ch Date: Thu, 28 Nov 1996 From: Le Gros Matou<ABOLINS@pa.msu.edu> Subject: recruiting DearHarry and Mont: As you may know, I am spending this week at CERN on a recruiting trip. I have had repeated conversations with members of the Saclay group relative to their intended participation in D0. It appears that there is some momentum being built up in that about six younger physicists have expressed an interest in joining ……… The next step will probably be an extended visit by Le Du, Ernwein et al. to Fermilab to work out the details. Maris aka LE GROS MATOU Date: Tue, 10 Dec 1996 From: "DAPCLS::AZYLBER"@D0GS01 To: D0GS01::SMTP%"mont@d0sgi0.fnal.gov" Subject: RE: Saclay and the Vertex Trigger. DAPAX1, 10-DEC-1996 Hello Mont, For the time being there's nothing you can do to help the process of Saclay physicist joining the D0 upgrade because nothing has been formalized yet. I'm in the middle of writting some kind of "letter of Interest" and ask interested people to sign it; we will see then who is really serious. ……….. Things are moving slowly but at least they seem to move in the correct direction. Amities Armand Lots of discussion ensues: contributions of which French groups, where to contribute, how many people, agenda, etc…. workshop in Paris in March 1997 (Mont very instrumental)

  16. Paris, March 1997 DØ France D0 Meeting in Paris: Tentative Agenda Monday, March 24, 1997 9:30 -- 10:00 Overview of Workshop; Tevatron & Detector upgrades H. DØ people.

  17. Follow up Paris, March 1997 DØ France Internal workshop(s) in France at Orsay to discuss ( May 1997) • There were about 30 people attending. • Aurore is organizing in Paris a workshop with CDF similar to the one we had with D0. • Less interest in the vertex trigger • People showed interest in analyzing run1a data (particularly W-->e,nu in the frwd region). • Orsay presented stuff on the hardware calibration of the calo. • Presentation of the computing center in Lyon and there was consensus that we could use this for the simulation (this could be a way to"pay" for "running costs") and for the analysis provided that we have a copy of all the DST's there. • The situation is more or less clear in Saclay: we will join D0 but with less ambitions hardware-wise and money-wise that what we were hoping. Edited version Through several visits to FNAL over next few months, contributions , institutions and people commitments become clearer defined.

  18. Decisions 1997, 1998 DØ France • Date: Thu, 30 Oct 1997 • From: Gregorio Bernardi <gregorio@mail.desy.de> • To: weerts@fnald0.fnal.gov, Hugh Montgomery <mont@d0sgi0.fnal.gov> • cc: Pierre Petroff <Pierre.Petroff@cern.ch>, • Subject: D0 IS APPROVED at IN2P3 • Dear Mont and Harry, • today every person having signed the D0 or CDF french proposal has received a letter from Detraz and Repellin. ……. • IN2P3 will support the participation of a team of physicists to the D0 experiment…….. • Motivated by: • - prepare young physicists to the LHC- • - have phd students on real data • - technical contributions will be limited.- only run 2 • - after a growing phase, group up to 30 physicists • participation should not jeopardize LHC preparation. • finally our common project has been endorsed. ………… • Champagne Pierre / Greg Within France: Wednesday, January 07, 1998 D0 collaboration meeting today. IB meeting admitted IN2P2 and increased size of Saclay. Next day introduce Pierre Petroff & Greg Bernardi to Fermilab director(J.Peoples) Within D0:

  19. Decisions 1997, 1998 DØ France Changes to DØ institutions on the WEB (Jan. 1998): Add the new IN2P3 institutions from France. The IN2P3 institutions are LAL Orsay, CPPM Marseille, ISN Grenoble and Paris VI-VII. You can find their webpages, by going to www.in2p3.fr and The contact people are: Marseille: Elemer Nagy Orsay: Pierre Petroff Paris VI-VII: Gregorio Bernardi Officially in D0 Took ~ 1year Feb 1999: Add Grenoble, contact Gerard Sajot April 2000: Add Lyon, contact Patrice Lebrun Interesting how IN2P3 joined DØ. (Separate talk about contributions)

  20. D0 workshop 1997, Indiana Univ. Let pictures speak for themselves (Only picture of JC I could find) No idea what we were in for………..

  21. ~April 1999 Upgrade (~ 1.5 years after baseline) Good progress after March 1997 review for 1998…….. Concerns about how upgrade was progressing from DoE and others. Rollin date had been moved to May 2000, considered not realistic Jim Christenson resigned as Upgrade Project Manager (April 1999) Great upheaval in upgrade project and in collaboration. Reorganization of upgrade and experiment with wide impacts Many changes in next few months. DoE review coming up in June ‘99. New director coming at Fermilab. Spokes Upgrade Management Changes at top H.Montgomery H.Weerts M.Tuts H.Weerts (replace JC) Not optimal……… Scrambled through May  August 1999

  22. ~Sept 1999 Final Schedule for Run II Sept-14-99 D0 collab mtg New director (Witherell) Slipped by 6 months Realistic…. In the end accomplished this

  23. Memorable things & pictures SMT Eric Kajfasz (Marseille), SMT would have never worked without him Expertise limited in D0, when started…. Delays at Micron Semiconductor dictated schedule Fermilab “took” over Micron Large effort at SiDet facility D0 developed & trained a news et of Si experts  now working on new projects Install north

  24. Memorable things & pictures Fiber tracker Fiber ribbon mounting Critical: Cylinders Make ribbons of fibers Install fibers Measure fibers VLPC VLPC cryostats Fibers landing Signals out Fiber routing nightmare CFT installation in solenoid

  25. Memorable things & pictures Muon system Muon truss at Lab E “ A Russian Affair” Replaced complete forward system Trigger scintillators Min Drift tubes New trigger Muon C layer Just HUGE Best muon system (trigger) ever built

  26. Memorable things Triggers One area of close collaboration with CDF ( and MSU and U of Mich.) Develop Alpha processors (Windows NT based) One problem after the other ( morel like disasters) Prototype worked, but no production…… many man years gone Started run…… replaced afterwards L2 Struggle for all involved Initially based on custom system for D0 Based on special expertise and Windows NT and custom hardware from Run I (VRBs) Delays kept on occurring. Jan 2001:it would not work Implemented new solution based on standard data transfer and Linux processors L3 Old and new groups worked together and realized a working systems within months.

  27. Installation schemes…. Called “Tutti- Frutti” Land……used to plan

  28. Dzero moved in January 2001

  29. Dzero in and its people February 2001

  30. Summary Was good to go through history ( relive some) DØ was large part of my life Reminded me that I am getting old…. Thanks to all of my DØ colleagues Preparing this talk ( technology has moved/is moving on) It was good to see something like the upgrade come together and be an integral part of it. Great to see DØ grow (in people & in science) and be part of that as well It has been a privilege and great scientific & social experience to work on DØ and with colleagues from all over the globe. While doing it………… Looking back………….. it was a struggle and challenging it was simply a blast
