  1. Driving Distractions By Ethan Patchett

  2. Big Question Will a driver be distracted by either talking on a phone or talking to a person in a car? Will distractions affect normal driving?

  3. Hypothesis • I think talking on the phone will distract the driver and the distracted driver will score lower on the driving video game.

  4. The Experiment • Material • The Wii game Indy 500 racing game • People to play the game • Questions •  Steps • Each person plays the driving game three times. Then we will find the average time. • Each person plays the driving game. My mom will ask questions to the person playing the game. • The difference between the distracted and the non – distracted time will be found • What will the time difference show?

  5. Race Data – No Distractions Time Place Avg Ethan 10:25.88 1st place Ethan 10:32.40 1st place Ethan 10:39.10 1st place 10:32 Scott 10:46.24 15th place Scott 10:53.26 20th place Scott 10:31.77 1st place 10:43 Zack 10:42.55 11th place Zack 10:42.27 5th place Zack 10:39.10 1st place 10:41 mm:ss.ss

  6. Race Data – With Distractions Time Place +/- Ethan 11:33.00 23rd + 1:01 Scott 10:47.51 26th + :05 Zack 10:46.16 20th + :05 mm:ss.ss

  7. Analysis of data • The experiment did test my hypothesis. • The distractions did affect the player’s driving and score.

  8. Conclusion • My hypothesis was correct. • In my experiment I could have added greater distractions to make it harder for the driver. • The new questions I have are should I have tested better driver than my brother and myself? Would a Professional driver have scored higher than a regular person? I liked doing this experiment, and I hope people will be more careful driving their cars.
