  3. Introduction As you prepare to study William Shakespeare’s tragedy, Romeo and Juliet, we thought it would help to understand the time period and setting for the play. Through this Web Quest you will examine the life and times of Shakespeare and the setting of the play. This will involve a lot of work from you and your group members and you will need to apply some of the research skills that you have learned here in the media center to this research activity.   4. Task For this Web Quest you will be divided into groups and then assigned one of six topics. You and your group will then complete the work associated with your topic. After the completion of the work you will individually write a mini-research paper documenting the information that you found on your topic. You will need to follow MLA format as you were taught previously. Also each group is required to make a 5-10 minutes presentation to the class about their topic. The topic can be presented in the form of a skit, PowerPoint, poster, etc. See Mrs. Farrar or Mrs. Loyall if you need help deciding your presentation format. Back to title slide

  5. Process Topic One: Shakespeare’s Life Answer the following questions about Shakespeare’s life: When and where was William Shakespeare born? Describe his upbringing and education What were the four types of plays he wrote? Where were his plays performed and by whom? Besides writing plays, what other skills made Shakespeare a “jack of all trades?” When and where did Shakespeare die? Why do we still read his works today? Use this website www.bartelby.com (Bartlett’s Famous Quotations) to find 3 famous quotes that originated in Shakespeare’s works listing from which work each quote came from. Back to title slide

Process Topic Two: Religion and Intellectual Life Answer the following questions about the religious and intellectual aspects of Elizabethan England Describe the four elements thought to compose the universe. Describe the four humours and their relationship to personality. What was the relationships between humours and illnesses. What type of medicine was administered and by whom was it dispensed during this time period? Describe the religious climate during this time. What was considered to be the center of the universe at this time? Who controlled it? Describe the hierarchy of beings or “chain of beings” believed in by Shakespeare and his contemporaries.   7. Process Topic Three: Queen Elizabeth and Elizabethan Life Answer the following questions about Queen Elizabeth and life during her reign. When was Queen Elizabeth I reign and who was her father and mother? Identify the social classes during Shakespeare’s time. What is primogeniture? Describe the status of women. What was the Bubonic Plague and how did it affect society during Shakespeare’s time? Describe some of the types of homes that could be found during this time period. Describe how country life compared to city life. How were crimes dealt with during this time period? Back to title slide

  8. Process Topic Four: Marriage Customs and Fashion Answer the following questions about Elizabethan marriage customs and fashion. Where did marriages take place during this time period? What were the reasons for arranging marriage contracts? Who performed the marriage ceremony? What was the common age for marriage? What is a betrothal? Describe the common wedding attire for this time period. Describe what food might be served at a wedding feast. Describe some of the fashions of both men and women during this time period. Process • Topic Five: The Elizabethan Theater • Answer the following questions dealing with the Elizabethan theater: • Where were most theaters built (in or out of the city?) and why? • Why is the Globe Theater famous? • What time of day did performances take place and how was the public notified about performances? • Who played the female roles and why? • Describe the costumes. • What other skills did actors need besides acting ability? • Who was Richard Burbage, the King’s Men or Chamberlain’ Men? • What was the cost of standing room at the Globe Theater? • Identify the following: • Pit • Groundling • Heavens • Trap Door • Tiring House Back to title slide

Process Topic Six: Food and Entertainment Answer the following questions dealing with food and entertainment during the Elizabethan period: What were the most common things eaten by all people during this time period? What were some of the more common beverages during this time period? How did people preserve and season food during this time period? Describe the types of music during this time period. What types of dancing did people do during this time period? Describe some of the sports and outdoor activities from this time period. What holidays were celebrated and how? What were any other activities that people did for leisure during this time period? Back to title slide

Evaluation • Mini-Research Paper Requirements • 2-3 pages in length (not including the works cited section) • Double spaced • 12 font (either Times New Roman or Tahoma) • Minimum of six examples of parenthetical documentation within the paper using correct MLA format • Works Cited Section which includes at least six different sources • All questions relevant to your research topic are completely answered and fully explained. • Your group will need to also make a 5-10 minute presentation the class about your topic. Not all group member need to speak, but everyone must contribute to the overall presentation. Back to title slide

  13. Conclusion After completing the mini-research paper and viewing every groups’ presentation you should have an overview of the life and times of William Shakespeare. Based on the information you received from this research and the presentations you will successfully complete a multiple-choice quiz over all of the topics. The hopes of this assignment is that it will contribute to your understanding and appreciation of the play, Romeo and Juliet. Back to title slide
