Reasons You Might Be a Geologist If … 1. You own more pieces of quartz than underwear.2. Your rock collection weighs more than you do.3. Your rock garden is located inside your house.4. You don’t think of “cleavage” the same way everyone else does.5. You think the primary function of road cuts is tourist attractions.6. You find yourself compelled to examine individual rocks in driveway gravel.7. You have ever had to respond “yes” to the question, “What have you got in here, rocks?”8. You associate the word “saw” with diamonds instead of “wood”. Rocks Introduction
A short quiz • Have a small piece of paper out. • 4 questions today on minerals and the ESRT.
Question 1 • Name 3 mineral properties.
Question 2 • What are the steps to ID a mineral? (ESRT?)
Question 3 • Give me the information for Gypsum
Question 4 • I am a mineral: • Luster: Nonmetallic • Hardness: 7.0 • Cleavage or Fracture: Fracture • Color: Purple • Streak: None or clear
Answers • Name 3 mineral properties. • Luster, Hardness, Cleavage, Fracture, Color, Streak, Density. • What are the steps to ID a mineral? • Luster, Hardness, Cleavage, Fracture, Color, Streak, Density. • information for Gypsum • Nonmetallic, hardness of 3, Cleavage, Clear to white • I am a mineral • Quartz
Objectives • Today I want you to be able to: • Understand that rocks are different than minerals. • The three rock types names and basically how they form.
Rocks • What are they? • A solid material that is made from a collection of minerals. • How are they different from a mineral? • Rocks are made of minerals while minerals are made from atoms. (IAOA)
Types of Rocks • Igneous (from fire) • Inside and outside of Earth • Metamorphic (heat & pressure) • Inside Earth • Sedimentary (sediments from other rocks) • Usually outside Earth
Properties of rock types • Igneous • Crystals • Maybe some holes in it • NO fossils • Metamorphic • Banding of minerals • No fossils • Random other mineral crystals • Sedimentary • Fossils • Layers of sediment • Sediment
Observations • Look at a rock, tell me what you see: • Notice color • grains and size of them • any fossils • density • layers of stuff • minerals in the rock • Noticing these properties can tell you what type of rock it is!
Try it • You write down whether you think the sample is Sedimentary, Igneous or Metamorphic.
