Christianity. Beginnings of Christianity. Christianity started off as a branch of Judaism. Founded by followers of Jesus. Jesus was believed to be the Hebrew’s (Jew’s) Messiah . Messiah means savoir. Many Jewish people felt the savior would save them from the Romans.

Beginnings of Christianity • Christianity started off as a branch of Judaism. • Founded by followers of Jesus. • Jesus was believed to be the Hebrew’s (Jew’s) Messiah. • Messiah means savoir. • Many Jewish people felt the savior would save them from the Romans. • Jews had been revolting against the Romans, including Zealots. The History of it… • Jesus preached about love, forgiveness, and God’s grace. • This was in stark contrast to the Pharisees, who were Jewish religious leaders, and preached about following rules and laws. • Jesus had many disciples. He was betrayed by one of them, and handed over to the Pharisees who did not like Jesus. • A disciple is a student or follower. • The Pharisees then told the Romans that Jesus was trying to start a rebellion. Jesus was then crucified.
Basic Christian Beliefs • One true God. • Jesus was the son of God, messiah, and savoir to God’s people. • Jesus died for the people’s sins and then was resurrected. • The holy book is the Bible containing both the Old and New Testaments. • The Gospels are four important books in the New Testament (Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John) • Paul, an early missionary wrote many epistles to various churches that he had visited.
Christianity Spreads • Jesus told is follows to go and spread the word. • Many Romans were impressed by Christian martyrs. • A martyr is someone who dies for their religious beliefs. • Christians were persecuted first by Nero. • Often thrown to the lions. • Universality of Christianity • Promise of an afterlife.
Causes for Persecution • Christians believed in only one God. • Roman religion believed in many gods. • The emperor was considered a god; Christians would not worship the emperor. • Christians did not aspire to be very rich. • Would not fight in the army.
