  2. The Chinese American Story • When did they immigrate? • Why did they come to America? • What did they do here? • How were they received?

  3. Where and When? • Mid 1800s • Most who came for the Gold Rush were from southern China—Guangdong.

  4. Why immigrate and what next? • Why theycame to America: • Poverty, war, floods, and typhoons in southern China • Seek money elsewhere to support family • “Gold Mountain” • What they did here • Railroad Workers (Transcontinental RR) • Gold Mining • Farming (sugar in Hawaii & agriculture in CA)

  5. How were they recieved? • Hard workers • Work for less • … then feared (you will learn why…)

  6. Primary Source Discovery • 5 minute per placard round robin activity • Use graphic organizer • Explain the document/source • 3 things you learned from it • For the sake of time, each group will only get to do 4 of the 5 • Report out to class on the last one your group looked at: Causation, Evidence, Agency, Significance Continuity and Change
