What Is the code of ethics? • The ALA Code of Ethics is a set of standards used to guide librarians in their profession. • The primary value in the Code is that of “intellectual freedom and the freedom of access to information”. • The eight principles of the Code identify key concepts important to libraries and librarians.
Equal service to all library users ALA Code of Ethics – Principle 1 I. We provide the highest level of service to all library users through appropriate and usefully organized resources; equitable service policies; equitable access; and accurate, unbiased, and courteous responses to all requests.
Intellectual freedom / anti-censorship ALA Code of Ethics – Principle 2 II. We uphold the principles of intellectual freedom and resist all efforts to censor library resources.
Protection of privacy for all library users ALA Code of Ethics – Principle 3 III. We protect each library user's right to privacy and confidentiality with respect to information sought or received and resources consulted, borrowed, acquired or transmitted.
Balancing interests of information users and information rights holders ALA Code of Ethics – Principle 4 IV. We respect intellectual property rights and advocate balance between the interests of information users and rights holders.
Workers’ rights/positive work environment ALA Code of Ethics – Principle 5 V. We treat co-workers and other colleagues with respect, fairness, and good faith, and advocate conditions of employment that safeguard the rights and welfare of all employees of our institutions.
Putting the goals of libraries above self-interest ALA Code of Ethics – Principle 6 VI. We do not advance private interests at the expense of library users, colleagues, or our employing institutions.
Separation of personal beliefs and professional duties ALA Code of Ethics – Principle 7 VII. We distinguish between our personal convictions and professional duties and do not allow our personal beliefs to interfere with fair representation of the aims of our institutions or the provision of access to their information resources.
Continued education and professional development ALA Code of Ethics – Principle 8 VIII. We strive for excellence in the profession by maintaining and enhancing our own knowledge and skills, by encouraging the professional development of coworkers, and by fostering the aspirations of potential members of the profession.
