History As the alumnae base in New York City started to grow in the early 2000s, six very dedicated sisters decided to establish an alumnae chapter to give New York City-based alumnae an opportunity to continue embracing the principles of Unity Love, and Respect. On October 6, 2003, Lambda Eta Alumnae Chapter was founded by the following sisters: Amanda Roman (Xi) Jessica Serrano (Chi) Lydia Gonzalez (Xi) Kathy Rivera (Xi) Jenilee Ramirez (Xi) Angelica Ferraras (Xi)

  3. The chapter experienced major growth within the last couple of years as more undergraduate chapters were established throughout the state of New York and nationwide. Although the chapter has experienced some challenges in the past, especially becoming defunct, over the course of the last 2 years the chapter has managed to re-establish and rebrand itself into one of the most active chapters in the country.

Community Service Projects 2009-2010 This year Lambda Eta wanted to offer a variety of community service projects and fundraisers that reflected the interests of sisters in the chapter, as each project we worked on was suggested by an active member. Our main theme this year was: Empowering Youth, which ranged from supporting the survival of premature babies or to assist young ladies develop professional and academic goals for the future. Many of our members felt that members of our organization have a lot of knowledge and experience that we can share to the youth of New York. The community service projects that took place over the past year has helped unite our chapter, engaged more sisters to become active through Lambda Eta, and has provided new opportunities and role models for many young people in New York.

Community Service Projects 2009-2010 Open Mic Night for GEMS (Girls Educational Mentoring Services) This year in November Lambda Eta teamed up with GEMS to help women who have experienced sexual exploitation. We held an Open Mic Night at La Pregunta Arts Cafe as a fundraiser for the organization. All of the performers were women and the event had a theme of female empowerment. We had a representative from GEMS who came to the show as well. Girls Educational & Mentoring Services (GEMS) is the only organization in New York State specifically designed to serve girls and young women who have experienced commercial sexual exploitation and domestic trafficking. GEMS was founded in 1999 by Rachel Lloyd, a young woman who had been sexually exploited as a teenager. GEMS has helped hundreds of young women and girls, ages 12-21, who have experienced commercial sexual exploitation and domestic trafficking to exit the commercial sex industry and to develop to their full potential. GEMS provides young women with empathetic, consistent support and viable opportunities for positive change. Attendance: 30 Money Fundraised: $250

  8. Community Service Projects 2009-2010 Thanksgiving Soup Kitchen Bronx On Thanksgiving Day sisters volunteered at Christ Church located at 860 Forest Avenue Bronx, NY for a soup kitchen. Number of participants: 4 Community Service Hours: 12 The New York Kidney Walk In October, Sisters of Lambda Eta braved horrible weather conditions to support the New York Kidney Walk. The National Kidney Foundation's Kidney Walk is a fun, inspiring, community fundraiser which calls attention to the prevention of kidney disease and the need for organ donation. It's also an opportunity for patients, family, friends and businesses to come together to support the millions of Americans with chronic kidney disease. Thanks to the money raised through the walks, NKF is able to offer free health screenings for kidney disease, public and professional education programs, advocacy to make patients' voices heard through legislative action, and a vital research program to identify new clinical treatments. Ten sisters braved the walk over the Brooklyn Bridge and back, during a storm, to show support and strength to the survivors and those still battling kidney disease. Attendance: 10 (5 Hours) Money Donated: $75 (Individually donated by sisters)

  10. Community Service Projects 2009-2010 Toy Drive A sister works for the organization: the Jewish Childcare Association which is a nonprofit, nonsectarian, multi-cultural child and family service foster care & adoption agency with programs and services throughout New York City (NYC). Due to budget cuts they were not able to have any money to provide toys to the children and families in their program and were desperately in need of donations. To help them with this crisis Lambda Eta organized a toy drive happy hour with the New York Alumnae Chapter of Phi Iota Alpha within three weeks to ensure that each child would have toys for the holiday. We were able to collect toys for the Jewish Childcare Association and Toys for Tots, which was the organization Phi Iota Alpha donated toys to. Items: 100 toys 2 hours

  11. Community Service Projects 2009-2010 Doggie Play Date Fundraiser Members of chapter believe it is important to show love to all creatures. In this tough economic climate many pets are being abandoned because their owners can no longer afford to take care of them. Animal Haven is a nonprofit organization that finds homes for abandoned cats and dogs throughout the Tri-State area, and provides behavior intervention when needed to improve chances of adoption.  Founded in 1967, they operate a limited admission shelter/adoption center in Manhattan and mobile adoption van. They also provide programs that enhance the bond between animals and people. During this event we had sisters bond and provide a safe space for their dogs to play during the session. We were able to fundraiser ($) to help Animal Haven continue its wonderful services. Attendance: 10 Money Donated: $85

  12. Community Service Projects 2009-2010 March of Dimes Our chapter's philanthropy is the March of Dimes. This cause is very dear to us, not only because we value life, but because some of our sisters have personally experienced having premature babies and overcame the trials and tribulations that come with this. The mission of the March of Dimes is to improve the health of babies by preventing birth defects, premature birth, and infant mortality. They carry out this mission through research, community services, education and advocacy to save babies' lives. March of Dimes researchers, volunteers, educators, outreach workers and advocates work together to give all babies a fighting chance against the threats to their health: pre-maturity, birth defects, low birth weight. Due to weather conditions many sisters were unable to participate in the walk but we were still able to support the cause by making a donation. Donation: $100

  13. Community Service Projects 2009-2010 Ladies In Action (L.I.A) (part 1) This past December Lambda Eta was proud to announce the development of the chapter’s first mentoring program. This project was initiated by Sisters who were interested in sharing their knowledge and experience to empower youth, so they can become agents of change in their community. This program is collaboration between Lambda Eta and the East Harlem Tutorial Program (www.ehtp.org), EHTP for short, which is a free after school program run by an exceptional staff and nearly 200 volunteers. EHTP offers East Harlem’s youth comprehensive academic and social enhancing activities, including reading, math, science, one-to-one tutoring, and arts and culture courses. EHTP's programs take place during both the school calendar year and summer. In addition to youth-based programs, EHTP also offers a variety of family services, including ESL (English as a second language)/Family Literacy classes and social counseling. Together these programs provide a solid foundation for youth and families to succeed. Sisters of Lambda Eta mentor 7th and 8th grade ladies from The East Harlem Tutorial Program one Saturday a month. Part of the commitment as a mentor is to attend every session and plan one session with one or two other mentors. The objective of this program is to provide guidance and support to these young ladies as they begin to develop their academic and professional goals. We plan various field trips and workshops to expose the girls to all of the opportunities New York City holds for them. During our previous sessions we have taken the girls to places like Rockefeller Center, the Sony Wonder Museum, and New York University and have held workshops about healthy eating habits, body image, and developing strong communication skills.

  14. Community Service Projects 2009-2010 Ladies In Action (L.I.A) (part 2) Even though the program is still in its early stages, we have watched how these girls have grown and are making changes in their lives. Our sessions have addresses issues such as nutrition and self-confidence and we have been able to bring in guest speakers for workshops that included: an introduction to a career in fashion and a workshop on college preparation requirements, college admissions, financial aid, and scholarships. As a token of our appreciations and a momentum of the program, each girl is given a charm during each session. We will be having a graduation ceremony were the girls will construct their charm bracelet, representing their experience. They will also have a bowling trip and BBQ with the mentors during the summer. Total Number of Sisters Participating: 15 Total Community Service Hours per sister: 42 hours Total Hours on this project: 630

  15. Community Service Projects 2009-2010 Strikes for Success- A Fundraiser for Ladies in Action (LIA) In order to fundraise for our mentoring program, members of Lambda Eta organized a fundraiser at 300 Bowling Alley located at Chelsea Piers on April 27th. We recruited teams of six to compete for a first place title. Each participant had to pay $20 and if you just wanted to be a spectator we asked for a minimum donation of $5. We were able to recruit 12 teams for the competition and had a huge crowd of people in support. We eventually lost count of the people who came in and donated to support our program. Everyone had a wonderful time and helped out an amazing cause. This event proved to be one of the best fundraisers held by a Greek organization in New York City, and we were told by EHTP that is was the best fundraiser their organization has had. Attendance: 100+ Total Amount Fundraised: $1000

  16. Community Service Projects 2009-2010 The Latina A.R.M.Y., For the members of Lambda Theta Alpha, Latin Sorority Inc. Lambda Eta NY Alumnae Chapter, it is very important to help empower young women to achieve their fullest potential. That is why LTA teamed up with Latina A.R.M.Y. to help young women realize their fullest potential. The Latina A.R.M.Y., Inc. is a volunteer-based, non-profit organization whose mission is to empower young Latinas through a series of workshops. In a national effort, accomplished Latinas give two hours of their time to talk to young girls at their local school or community center to teach them four life tools they can use to create the life they deserve. With the help of Haizel McIntyre, Lambda Eta Chapter Vice-President, the goal is to recruit up to ten sisters within the New York area to join the efforts of this organization. Haizel is not only a sister of LTA but she is one of our volunteers and she has also assisted with creating the newsletter for the organization and will continue to assist Latina A.R.M.Y. with initiatives focused in the New York area. LTA was very excited to include Latina A.R.M.Y. as one of its service projects this year and looks forward to future collaborations. Lambda Eta sisters have already begun the initiative within NYC schools and have received great feedback from the young participants and the school's advisors, as currently we have three sisters enrolled in this project.
