VOLUNTEER WORK Organization Description City Team Ministries April 2010 San Jose, CA Description: For my community service project, I volunteered at City Team Ministries, which is a non-profit organization that serves the poor and homeless. The organization's mission statement is, "In obedience to Christ, passionately transforming individuals, their families and communities throughout the world," according to its website. City Team pledges to help as many poor and disadvantaged people as they can by providing food, shelter, clothing, education and recreation. City Team was started in 1957 by Lester and Pauline Meyers. The organization sought out to feed homeless men in downtown San Jose. Four years later, the organization was known as San Jose Rescue Mission. In 1983, the organization changed its name to City Team, which represented the organization's purpose more accurately. City Team can also be found in San Francisco, Oakland, Portland and Philadelphia.
