  2. Graduating Comes First • Pass ALL required courses • Ask your teacher for help • Request tutoring during 7th period GPS time • Utilize computer lab 311: opens at 6:30 am • Utilize the library: opens at 7:00 am • Get a peer tutor: list available in Student Services • Get a private tutor

  3. And… • Pass the AHSGE • Take every opportunity: September, December, March • Get remediation for math or reading during 7th period GPS • Pay attention to class bell ringers (usually related to AHSGE) • Get a private tutor

Preparing for college: Take required tests: ACT or SAT • Register at www.actstudent.org • Register at www.collegeboard.com • Free/reduced lunch: • Up to 2 fee waivers for both the ACT & SAT • Available in Student Services • If you’re attending a 2 year community college or trade school, you aren’t required to take; however, the college will give you a placement test.

Steps for Applying to Colleges Apply to colleges • Apply by October 31st for four-year universities to ensure no missed deadlines • Two year colleges: should apply by February for best selection & other deadlines • Fill out application online • Pay the application fee • Send ACT/SAT scores • Select schools when you register and its free • Select later through their websites…for a fee • Send high school transcript • Request forms in Student Services • Parent signature required if under 18 • Cost $3 for 1 or $10 for unlimited • Must fill out request for each time want one sent • Check for additional applications requirements; i.e. recommendation letters, essays

Managing the Finances Plan finances • Compare school costs • Attend THS Financial Aid Night (in October – Date TBA) • Research & apply for scholarships • Start with your college choices websites • Review requirements & check DEADLINES • If needed, submit separate application by deadline • Check out scholarship listings in the Guidance portion of the THS website • List updated each newsletter • Be realistic: most scholarships based on high GPA & ACT/SAT and/or large service component • Complete the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) • Used to determine grants, loans, work study, and some scholarship eligibility verification • Based on parents 2013 tax information • Available January 1, 2014 • Complete online at www.fafsa.gov

NCAA/NAIA Eligibility Prepare for college athletics • Register online through the NCAA Eligibility Center at http://eligibilitycenter.org • Register online through the NAIA Clearinghouse at www.playnaia.org • Become familiar with general eligibility guidelines • Send transcripts from ALL high schools attended • Send ACT/SAT scores

What if traditional college isn’t for me? • Prepare for work: • Get work experience now • Prepare a resume (should be doing in your English class) • For more training/assistance go to www.joblink.alabama.gov/ada/ • Check out the Alabama Career Center in Alabaster • Be sure to graduate…many jobs require a high school diploma

  14. Vocational/Trade School • Fast track to a career • Offer programs in business, trade, technical, industrial & other related areas • Some schools only offer one are of study, like a cosmetology school • Examples in AL: Herzing, ITT Tech, Virginia College

Two-Year Collegeshttp://www.accs.cc/ • Earn an Associate degree or a certification in a technical area • Can use as a stepping stone to transfer to a college/university http://stars.troy.edu • Must graduate from high school or get your GED • Don’t have to take the ACT/SAT, but can • If don’t take ACT/SAT, you’ll take the COMPASS placement test

Important Information from the THS Guidance Office • Senior Guidance Newsletter (white paper) • Will be updated monthly, distributed to seniors and posted on THS Guidance Website • Senior Guidance Questionnaire (orange paper) • Helps Guidance provide extra help to you, helps us plan for recruiters who visit campus, recommendation letter material, etc. All seniors must complete this questionnaire and return to Student Services no later than September 21. • Optional Forms for those Interested in College • Teacher Recommendation Form (blue paper) • Provide this form to one teacher who can respond on his/her experience interacting with you. This is beneficial for writing recommendation letters for college and scholarships. • Upcoming Recruiter Visits (yellow paper) • Lets you know which college/military recruiters plan to visit THS as well as upcoming events in the area that you may find of interest. This information is updated regularly and posted to the THS Guidance website.
