  3. A FISHY SUCCESS STORY • Why is Fish Passage Important? • Declining Brook Trout populations in Eastern US • Brookies are clean water indicators • Impacts on genetics, sustainable pop base • Also impacts other fish, amphibians, stream dwellers

  4. DON’T STOP THAT FISH! • Biggest Problem-Culverts! • Thousands of them • Ignored and Poorly Regulated • In Multiple Jurisdictions • Lack of Guidelines

  5. GET A GRIP! • Found Money- US Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) • Developed MOU to get it • In Coop with US FWS, developed Request for Proposals • Negotiated with SUNY Plattsburgh Lake Champlain Research Institute

  6. DETAILS, DETAILS, DETAILS • Negotiated with the winner SUNY Plattsburgh on: • Scope of work to be performed • Timeframes and deadlines • Methodology • Geographic parameters • Outreach requirements • Payment schedule

  7. RIGHT DIRECTION? • In progress reviews • Minor study methodology changes

  8. GETTING CLOSE • Review of Results with FWS Experts • Plan for Outreach • Publicity • Get the Word to Event Shapers

  9. FINAL PRODUCT! • Surveyed Watersheds in Two Counties • Developed Easy to Use Protocols • Parameters: • Drop to pool • Stream water speed • Stream depth • Culvert/stream relationship

  10. MORE FINAL PRODUCT! • Hosted conference to present results • Invited key players • Attended by over 85 participants • Town Hwy superintendents, SWCD’s, State DEC, DOT, US FWS, River Assoc’s., Trout Unlimited, etc.
