  2. The USMS was created in 1789 with the First Judiciary Act • It is this nation’s “Oldest Federal Law Enforcement Agency” • The USMS is a bureau of the U.S. Department of Justice. • USMS Headquarters is in Arlington, Virginia • 94 Districts • Approximately 5,000 employees

  3. Missions • Judicial Security • Fugitive Investigations • Sex Offenders (Adam Walsh Act 2006) • Prisoner Services • Witness Security Program • Asset Forfeiture Program • Justice Prisoner and Alien Transportation • Court Orders • Special Missions

Judicial Security • USMS is responsible for protecting federal judicial officials (Judges, Attorneys and Jurors) • The USMS receives approximately 1200 threats/inappropriate communications nation wide targeting their protectees which include over 2600 federal judges • Threats received against USMS protectees Nevada Nationwide • FY2011 46 1,258 • FY2010 45 1,394 • FY2009 32 1,141 • FY2008 39 1,278

Thompson U.S. Courthouse (Reno) • Clifton Young U.S. Courthouse (Reno) • Ten (10) U.S. District Court Judges • Seven (7) Magistrate Judges • Five (5) Bankruptcy Judges • Three (3) Ninth Circuit Court Judges

  9. Witness Security Program • Provide the highest level of personal protection and a secure environment for witnesses and other participants in federal proceedings

  10. Asset Forfeiture District of Nevada • Manage 164 Assets (Vehicles, real property, financial instruments, etc.) • Total Value on Hand = 6.9 Million Nationwide • Manage 20,071 Assets (Vehicles, real property, financial instruments, etc.) • Total Value on Hand = 4.4 Billion

  11. Justice Prisoner and Alien Transportation System • The number of prisoners transported by the District of Nevada in 2011 – 620 • The number of prisoners transported nationwide in 2011 – 100,470

  12. Service of Process • The USMS enforces court orders on behalf of the federal courts • This includes temporary restraining orders, garnishments, summons and complaints • Approximately 560 items of process served per year by District of Nevada Deputy U.S. Marshals

  13. Special Missions First responders to National Emergencies (Hurricane Katrina, etc) National Security Deployments (Where our law enforcement presence is needed).
