INTRODUCTION TO WEB USABILITY AND ACCESSIBILITY COAP 2170 – WEEK 1 Don’t make me think! KRUG’S FIRST LAW OF USABILITY
Krug’s first and only law of (web) usability • Don’t make me think • Put yourself in the shoes of the “average” user • Try to eliminate any possible sources of confusion
Corollary • Sometimes we actually want our visitors to think! • Sensitive Actions • “Transfer all my funds to a Nigerian prince” • “Delete all my data” • Online quizzes • CAPTCHA • But, the goal is to make the visitors aware of
How do we avoid making site visitors think? • If you are not sure whether you are doing things right on your web site • Follow design conventions • Copy Learn from the Best • Keep yourself informed • The WWW is changing! • But most important of all - TEST • Steve Krug: “Rocket Surgery Made Easy”
Why bother simplifying? • You lose visitors? • It just makes sense to do things right for your visitors • Think of Apple and where it got them by doing things easy to use • People “satisfice”* and they “feel good” when they get things right BUT • It is more important to make something work, then to make something simple enough * Satisficing + sufficing (see Chapter 2 in Don’t Make me Think)
Usability in an ideal world • Make something that works • Simplify how this works • Simplify further how it works • (repeat until it can not be any simpler and still does what the user wants) • Once it’s as simple as possible, make it engaging without increasing complexity • “Gamification”
