WHEN YOU WONDER WHY YOUR CHRISTIAN LIFE ISN’T WORKING LIKE IT SHOULD
5 He (God) saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of His mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit, 6 whom He poured out on us generously through Jesus Christ our Savior. Titus 3:5, 6
16 And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Counselor to be with you forever— 17 the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept Him, because it neither sees Him nor knows him. But you know Him, for He lives with you and will be in you. John 14:16-17
15 For you did not receive a spirit that makes you a slave again to fear, but you received the Spirit of sonship. And by Him we cry, “Abba, Father.” 16 The Spirit Himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children. Romans 8:15-16
12“I have much more to say to you, more than you can now bear. 13But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on His own; He will speak only what He hears, and He will tell you what is yet to come. 14He will bring glory to me by taking from what is mine and making it known to you. John 16:12-14
8But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” Acts 1:8
22But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. Galatians 5:22, 23
QUENCH… Do not quench the Spirit. 1 Thessalonians 5:19
QUENCH… Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord. Romans 12:11
QUENCH… Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord. Romans 12:11 Do not treat prophecies with contempt. 1 Thessalonians 5:20
QUENCH… 6 For this reason I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you through the laying on of my hands. 7 For God did not give us a spirit of timidity, but a spirit of power, of love and of self-discipline. 2 Timothy 1:6-7
Fear quenches the Holy Spirit because it causes us to focus on ourselves instead of on the Lordship of Jesus Christ.
JESUS OTHERS
QUENCH… 24 We have heard that some went out from us without our authorization and disturbed you, troubling your minds by what they said. 25 So we all agreed to choose some men and send them to you …to confirm by word of mouth what we are writing. 28 It seemed good to the Holy Spirit and to us not to burden you with anything beyond the following requirements. Acts 15:24-25, 28
11“Which of you fathers, if your son asks for a fish, will give him a snake instead? 12Or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion? 13If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him!” Luke 11:11-13
GRIEVE And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. Ephesians 4:30
GRIEVE “There is the possibility of marring the seal by which we are stamped. We are not questioning whether or not a person will share in the redemption of the body, but we must fear lest we deface or obscure the signature by which we are to be recognized.” A.J. Gordon
30 And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with Whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. 31 Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice. 32 Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you. Ephesians 4:25-32
ANGER… • …is such a subtle sin.
ANGER… • …is such a subtle sin. • …causes us to have the wrong focus
“It’s really dangerous for a pro football player to get angry. In fact, that’s when linemen sustain their most serious injuries.” He went on to explain: “Anger is so harmful in football that if I can get an opposing lineman or end angry at me, he will concentrate on beating me and forget to attack the quarterback.”
ANGER… Anger grieves the Holy Spirit because it causes us to focus on others instead of on the Lordship of Jesus Christ
JESUS ME OTHERS
“The wide receivers are continually trying to make us angry each time they come into our area because they know that if they can upset us emotionally, they can fool us on the next play.”
“To my astonishment I found that I wanted to live a holy life far more than I wanted to sin. Forgiveness freed me to do what I wanted most – to have the Holy Spirit work in my life.”
…being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus. Philippians 1:6
The Holy Spirit will keep doing His work in you unless you quench Him by your fear or grieve Him with your anger
