May 2002 - ICZM Recommendation of the European Parliament and of the Council calls for a strategic approach to coastal zone planning and management in order to achieve sustainable development (2002/413/EC) October 2005 - Thematic Strategy on the Protection and the Conservation of the Marine Environment adopted by the Commission, including a proposed Marine Strategy Directive (COM(2005) 504 and 505). June 2006 - Green Paper: "Towards a future Maritime Policy for the Union: A European vision for the oceans and seas") adopted by the Commission (COM(2006) 275 ) April 2007 - “Report to the European Parliament and the Council: an evaluation of Integrated Coastal Zone Management (ICZM) in Europe” (COM(2007) 308)

ICZM Protocol PAP/RAC 2008 facilitate, through the rational planning of activities, the sustainable development of coastal zones………; preserve coastal zones for the benefit of current and future generations; ensure the sustainable use of natural resources, particularly with regard to water use; ensure preservation of the integrity of coastal ecosystems, landscapes and geomorphology; prevent and/or reduce the effects of natural hazards and in particular of climate change, which can be induced by natural or human activities; achieve coherence between public and private initiatives and between all decisions by the public authorities…..

COASTAL ZONE MANAGEMENT ACT 1972 provide for the protection, conservation, rehabilitation and management of the coast including its resources and biological diversity; have regard to the goal, core objectives and guiding principles of the national strategy for ecologically sustainable development in the use of the coastal zone; provide with other legislation a co-ordinated and integrated management and administrative framework for the ecologically sustainable development of the coastal zone; encourage the enhancement of knowledge of coastal resources and the effect of human activities on the coastal zone.
