What is it & What we know • Social Media • refers to interaction among people in which they create, share, and/or exchange information and ideas in virtual communities and networks (Wikepedia) • We know it’s a: • Tool to seek advice, guidance, opinions, etc • Open forum for discussion • Empowers you to speak your mind • Eliminates the face-to-face interaction • Job search • Networking
Types • Facebook – social network • Twitter – real-time network • MySpace – social network • LinkedIn – professional network • YouTube – internet videos • Instagram – instant photo sharing • Flikr – photo sharing tool
Pros/Cons of SM • PROS: • Find friends, family, co-workers, etc. (Facebook, MySpace) • Update your friends and family on your recent life's events (Facebook) • Instant Messaging/Instant photos • Advertising/Marketing/Recruiting • Getting the message out to mass folks • Instructional/Informative/Educational videos (YouTube) • Real time information (Twitter)
Pros/Cons of SM • CONS: • Your life is an Open book – everybody knows what your doing • Cyber Bullying • Harassing • Obscene gestures/language • Violence (Street Fights, Gang fights, school fights, war scenes) • Racial • Derogatory • Unlawful acts (HOW TO make bombs, explosives, drugs, etc.) • Not anonymous; can become traceable • Geo Tagging • Stalking
Social Media vs. Perception • Watch what you say and post! PERCEPTION IS REALITY!!
What can happen to you? • Civilian: • Fired from work (guilty or not guilty) • Prevented from being hired for a position • Investigated for a crime • Lawsuits • Civilian courts/law • Military: • Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ) • Non-judicial punishment “Article 15” • Military confinement • Reduction in rank/pay • Dishonorable discharge
What can happen to you? • ROTC: • Investigated for disenrollment • Indifference to training • Undesirable character traits • Violation of the Honor Code • Removed from the program • If a Contracted cadet and proven guilty: • Required to pay back scholarship, or • Enlist on active duty for 2 years • If severe; report you to civil authority
