Apprenticeships and the expansion of higher education CEET26 October 2012
Methodology • LSAY data from Y95 and Y06 • Young males, focussing on academic achievement and SES • Model the probability of going to university by age 19 • Model the probability of undertaking an apprenticeship by age 19 as a function of prob of going to uni + other factors • Look how the relationships have changed
Probability of going to university • State • school sector • employed at age 15 • year 12 aspiration • born outside Australia • father is a trades worker • sex • trades workers concentration
Probability of going to university (cont) • maths and reading score • SES • cohort • cohort*sex • cohort*employed at 15 • cohort* father in trades • cohort*year 12 aspiration • cohort*SES
Probability of being an apprentice • propensity for university • year 12 aspiration • born outside Australia • father in the trades • trades worker concentration • maths and reading achievement • SES
Probability of being an apprentice (cont) • cohort • cohort*propensity for university • cohort*SES • cohort*employed at 15 • cohort*father in trades • cohort*yr 12 aspiration

Conclusions • Apprenticeships tend to draw on those with lower academic achievement and SES • but apprenticeships are drawing from a larger demographic than earlier • An expansion in higher education has accentuated this pattern a bit
