Chapter 16. Vital Concepts & Truths to Know in John 16. Jesus tries to prevent His disciples from falling/stumbling (16:1)! He clearly tells and forewarns of struggles and persecutions (John 16:2). His foretelling was for the purpose of strengthening faith (John 16:4).

Vital Concepts & Truths to Know in John 16 • Jesus tries to prevent His disciples from falling/stumbling (16:1)! • He clearly tells and forewarns of struggles and persecutions (John 16:2). • His foretelling was for the purpose of strengthening faith (John 16:4). • He is patient with them! • “I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now” (16:12). • How many times had He told them where He was from & where He was going? • He continues to tell them until it starts to “click” in John 16 (v. 28).

Vital Concepts & Truths to Know in John 16 • The promises of the coming & work of the Holy Spirit in John 16 were to the apostles! • “You” or “your” (addressed to the apostles) is found 61 times in the 33 verses. • The Holy Spirit would reveal truth to the apostles thru miraculous means (not us). • The truth that was revealed to and through them is ours today in Scripture. • The truth in Scripture is thoroughly complete (cf. 2 Tim. 3:16-17; 1 Cor. 2:8-13).

Vital Concepts & Truths to Know in John 16 • Jesus and His Father are one in nature! • “All things that the Father has are Mine” (John 16:15). • What a powerful and unambiguous affirmation of His deity (cf. Col. 2:9). • Whatever belongs to the Father is His; whatever belongs to Him is the Father’s!

Vital Concepts & Truths to Know in John 16 • Prayers are to be directed to the Father in the name of Jesus. • “Whatever you ask in My name…ask anything in My name…whatever you ask the Father in My name…ask in My name” (John 14:13-14; 15:16; 16:23-26). • “In the name of Jesus” means in the manner He authorizes, in harmony with His will. • Acceptable & answerable prayers are conditional (cf. 1 John 3:22; 5:14). • The joy of a disciple is made full, complete & permanent through prayer (16:24)! • Jesus intercedes (1 Jn. 2:1; Heb. 7:25; Rom. 8:34), but “in Jesus’ name” is not that.

Vital Concepts & Truths to Know in John 16 • A strong faith takes tremendous effort and diligence! • The apostles had been with Jesus for 3½ years, but their faith was still fragile & weak. • Continued to erroneously expect an earthly kingdom, throne & king. • Continued to not “hear” or “understand” what He was telling them. • Their faith and understanding took a giant step in John 16:30 – • “Now we are sure that You know all things…By this we believe…” • However, in the next two verses they would all be scattered! • Their faith was not deep enough, strong enough or enduring enough. • The impending troubles would push their faith to the breaking point. • If the faith of the apostles needed constant attention, cultivating & developing… • What are we doing? How much effort & diligence are we giving to grow in faith?

  7. Vital Concepts & Truths to Know in John 16 • Even when others (including friends & family) abandon you, God will not! • “You…will leave Me alone. And yet I am not alone, because the Father is with Me” (John 16:32).

Vital Concepts & Truths to Know in John 16 • The peace that Jesus gives is a remarkable thing! • It is independent of all earthly circumstances, concerns, worries & frustrations. • It is obtainable & powerful even in the face of hatred, trials, afflictions and rejection. • It is available only in Christ – “that in Me you may have peace” (John 16:33). • Contrary to what is “in the world” (i.e., tribulation) is the peace in Christ. • Present tense “have” indicates a continuous possession–“keep on having peace.” • It truly surpasses all understanding & eases the troubled heart (cf. 14:27; Phil. 4:6-7)!

  9. An Overview/Theme of John 16: “Jesus Was Going & the Spirit Was Coming” • Jesus was going to die! • “A little while, and you will not see Me” (John 16:16). He would die in a few hours! • When Jesus was arrested & taken away, His disciples would “be scattered” (16:32). • His disciples would leave Him to suffer and die alone! • When He died, Jesus said they would “weep and lament” and “sorrow” (16:20). • How infuriating that the world would “rejoice” when they were sorrowful (16:20)! • The world, along with Satan, no doubt thought they were victorious. • The rejoicing of the world/Satan was turned into sorrow (16:11; Heb. 2:14).

  10. An Overview/Theme of John 16: “Jesus Was Going & the Spirit Was Coming” • Jesus was going to be raised! • “And again a little while, and you will see Me” (16:16). They’d see Him again (16:22). • When Jesus was raised, the sorrow of the disciples was turned into joy (John 16:20). • His death was an occasion of much sorrow; it would produce much joy! • Sorrow would be forgotten in overwhelming joy on resurrection morning! • “Your heart will rejoice, and your joy no one will take from you” (John 16:22). • While sorrow was temporary, their joy was forever “unsnatchable”! • Thru the power of God, the resurrection & prayer, “joy may be full” (16:24).

An Overview/Theme of John 16: “Jesus Was Going & the Spirit Was Coming” • Jesus was going to His Father! • He repeatedly had told them, “I go away to Him who sent Me” (John 16:5, 10, 16). • Jesus said, “I have overcome the world” (John 16:33; cf. 1 John 4:4). • Only when Jesus left could the Holy Spirit come to the apostles (John 16:7) • It is vital to remember the promises made about the Holy Spirit were to the apostles.

  12. An Overview/Theme of John 16: “Jesus Was Going & the Spirit Was Coming” • The Holy Spirit was coming to comfort the disciples (John 16:7; cf. 14:16-17, 26). • The disciples needed the “Helper” to help, comfort, counsel, guide and teach them.

An Overview/Theme of John 16: “Jesus Was Going & the Spirit Was Coming” • The Holy Spirit was coming to convict the world (v. 8-11). • He would convict the world of sin (John 16:8). • Sin is an enormous problem and leads to tragic consequences. • The world does not believe in Jesus, which is the root cause of all sin (9). • He would convict the world of righteousness (John 16:8). • Righteousness is the only way to be acceptable to God (Acts 10:34-35). • Jesus was going back to the Father, and there is only one way to Him (16:10). • He would convict the world of judgment (John 16:8). • Eternal condemnation awaits those who do not turn to the Lord (cf. 2 Thess. 1:9). • Judgment is a certainty all will face; Satan has already been condemned (16:11).

  14. An Overview/Theme of John 16: “Jesus Was Going & the Spirit Was Coming” • The Holy Spirit was coming to the apostles for a specific purpose—the truth! (John 16:13; 14:26) • The Spirit of truth would guide the apostles into all truth. • The Spirit of truth would remind them of truth spoken by Jesus. • The Spirit of truth would reveal the truth of things to come. • The Spirit of truth would not originate truth (middle of 16:13). • The Spirit would not speak on His own authority (John 16:13; cf. 12:49). • The Spirit would speak whatever He heard & tell it plainly (16:13-15, 25). • The Spirit of truth would reveal truth (not originate). The revelation is complete! • It was Jesus’ truth being revealed; the Spirit would not question it or change it!

An Overview/Theme of John 16: “Jesus Was Going & the Spirit Was Coming” • Jesus was going to die! • Jesus was going to be raised! • Jesus was going to His Father! • Only when Jesus left could the Holy Spirit come to the apostles! • The Holy Spirit was coming to comfort the disciples! • The Holy Spirit was coming to convict the world! • The Holy Spirit was coming to the apostles for a specific purpose—the truth!

  16. How Chapter 16 Helps to Fulfill the Overall Purpose of the Gospel of John • “All things the Father has are Mine…I came forth from the Father” (John 16:15, 28).
