Pronunciation If a verb ends with a voiced consonant or vowel sound, then –ed is pronounced /d/ Voiced sound : – l – v – n – m – r – b – v – g – w – y – z – and vowel sounds (diphthongs) e.g. opened, played, carried, answered If a verb ends with an unvoiced consonant, then –ed is pronounced /t/ Unvoiced sound :– p – k – s – ch – sh – f – x – h – e.g. watched, cooked, washed, fixed Only when a verb ends with t or d, then –ed is pronounced /Id/ e.g. wanted, needed, visited
