Violent Collision and Defenseless Players Presenter: Matt Davis, Maryland 2014 - US Lacrosse Convention • Lacrosse is a contact sport – not a collision sport. • Lacrosse is similar only to football and ice hockey in the sense that intentional player-to-player contact is permitted – NHFS. • Studies have been conducted showing lacrosse is only second to football in the rate of concussion and increasing by 17% annually. • Trends in concussion incidence in high school sports: a prospective 11 year study. AM J Sports Med, 2011;39:958-963. • Understanding the mechanics leading to injury is important to prevention. • Protecting defenseless players and penalizing violent collisions.

  23. 2014 NFHS Rule Changes 2014 NFHS Rule Changes Rule 5, Section 4 Hits To The Head or Neck: With this revision, the penalty for hits to the head/neck will now be a minimum of a two- to three-minute non-releasable penalty. Hits to the head/neck continue to be a concern and this increased penalty will reinforce the need to eliminate these types of hits from the game. Oregon Lacrosse www.OHSLA.net

  24. 2014 NFHS Rule Changes 2014 NFHS Rule Changes Rule 7, Section 2f (NEW) Penalty Time (“Stacking Penalties”): This revised rule specifies that no more than three players on a team can be in the penalty area at any time. If more than three players on a team are assessed penalty time to be served concurrently, the additional penalized team member(s) must wait in the bench area until the penalty time of one of the three players in the penalty area expires. This will eliminate the possibility of a team playing with fewer than seven players. Oregon Lacrosse www.OHSLA.net

  25. 2014 NFHS Rule Changes 2014 NFHS Rule Changes Rule 7, Section 8, Article 2k Slow Whistle Technique: This revision specifies that, during a Flag Down situation (Slow Whistle), the officials will stop play to enforce penalties should a subsequent second defensive foul occur “during the final two minutes of regulation play with the team that is ahead possessing the ball in the goal/attack area, unless a scoring play is imminent.” This change will discourage the defensive team from fouling to gain possession.
