Asian population in Houston Source: U.S. Census, 2000
Why is the AsANA study important? • Inconsistent and inadequate collection of Asian health data • Asian American health concerns are poorly understood and often overlooked • Groupings for “whites” or “others” include Asians and other ethnic groups • Aggregation of Asian data masks true health problems within Asian subgroups • Without baseline data, we are unable to focus our research or measure changes
Asian American Health Needs Assessment Objectives: • To collect scientifically sound data on the health practices and health beliefs of Asian Americans in Houston and the surrounding area • To establish baseline data that can set the stage for future studies and research projects with Asian populations • To compare data with that of other minority groups and the general population • To provide the data to the targeted communities so they can apply for community development funding • To collect scientifically sound data on the health practices and health beliefs of Asian Americans in Houston and the surrounding area • To establish baseline data that can set the stage for future studies and research projects with Asian populations • To compare data with that of other minority groups and the general population • To provide the data to the targeted communities so they can apply for community development funding
Survey Development & Administration • Texas Community Health Survey (CHS) • Translated to Vietnamese and Chinese • Reviewed by Asian Community Health Review Panel • Randomly selected Chinese/Vietnamese households from Asian surname list • Participants 18+ years old • Informed consent

How many servings of fruits or vegetables did you eat yesterday?
Have you smoked at least 100 cigarettes in your entire life?
Have you ever had prostate cancer screening? (Men 40 yrs and older)
Have you ever had colorectal cancer screening? (Adults over 50 years old)
What does this mean for Asians in Houston? Access to health care may be difficult due to lack of insurance Limited English proficiency Low cancer screening rates Less aware of health resources and cancer prevention guidelines
Where do we go from here? • Further analysis and dissemination of AsANA data • Providing this information to community based organizations • Needs assessment, resource mapping and community discussions • Expanding this to other Asian populations, such as the South Asians • Future studies on other health topics • Periodic re-surveying of the population
