  1. CELEBRATION • The Feast of Weeks = in gathering Exodus 23:14 Wheat Harvest • A solemn rest • A time of soul searching • A feast of 7 days to the LORD in each year. The Feast of the Passover Exodus 12:1-50 ; Mark 14:1-25 Old Testament Presents the saving redeeming power of God New Testament The beginning of a new relationship with God through the person of Jesus Christ. Provides for an awakening and constant regeneration of the individual, body, mind, soul and spirit . Practical realistic provision that leaves no room for and prevents burnout in Nursing.

  2. CELEBRATION 2 The Feast of unleavened bread Provided opportunity to take away the wrong that had crept in and taken hold. Sharing and caring results in • Integrity and accountability • Identification of sin – overt and covert • Genuine repentance • Forgiveness and cleansing • Revival of commitment

  3. CELEBRATION 3 The Feast of Tabernacles Exodus 25:1 to 40:38 • Provided time for collective worship and thanksgiving. • International Nurses Week gives us this same privilege.

  4. WORSHIP AND THANKSGIVING Temples! Our bodies Romans 12:1 & 2 Our Homes Ephesians 5 and 6 Our Profession Ephesians 4:1 The ground on which we stand is holy ground when we look in faith and stand in the presence of a Holy God. Jesus said “ Go…and lo I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”Mathew 28:20

  5. SPIRITUAL Nursing is historically bound up in God’s plan of redemption with the first record being of the midwives Shipra and Pua and the impact through their practice on a whole nation. Exodus 1:8-22

SPIRITUAL AND PSYCHOSOCIAL • ‘Spiritual needs, and psychosocial needs are much less tangible than physical needs, because they are often abstract, complex and more difficult to measure. • These more intangible needs have frequently been given a much lower priority than needs which are more obvious and more easily measurable. • Spiritual needs, if expressed outside of a religious framework, are very likely to go unnoticed. • So if we are to identify spiritual needs and provide spiritual care, it's first necessary to have some understanding of the nature of spirituality and how it may be expressed by different individuals’

  7. SPIRITUAL DISTRESS • "Distress of the human spirit; disruption in the life principle that pervades a person's entire being and integrates and transcends one's biological and psychosocial nature." (Alfaro, 1990: 203) • This classification, first approved in its present form in 1988, recognises that suffering extends beyond the physical, mental and emotional. • Nurses recognise this in every patient care plan but how do we share and care for one another?

  8. SPIRITUAL OR HOLY • Divine power given to us brings growth of a holy frame of mind • This is a promise from our God “Who in His divine power has given us all things that pertain to life and godliness through the knowledge of Him who called us by glory and virtue.” 2 Peter 1 to 5

SPIRITUAL BUT UNHOLY We can be very religious but lacking in • Compassion and caring • Genuine love and respect • Integrity in executing true justice and mercy every man to his brother • Moral virtue and rectitude • Sexual fidelity • Ethical credibility • Understanding and appropriation of true human worth • Ability to accept truth that is humanly distressing and help people to appreciate and appropriate different health generating values.

  10. Guard, Create and Build our Legacy in Nursing • Personal dignity as a woman, a man, a Nurse. • Leisure time essentially during times of extreme stress. • Priority time with family. • Respect and keep God’s laws already written in the heart of man. • Keep from falling – speak the truth – don’t ignore weaknesses or temptations - realize that at any moment of any day we may be vulnerable. • You and me with God - guard, create and build our profession and the health services of the nation.

  11. Receiving from God is a deliberate act of our will • God’s promise is sure, His storehouse is not empty, He is waiting to give to each one that particular thing we need right now. Malachi 3:10 • We can ask, receive and never use • We can ask, receive and mean to use • We can reject and refuse to receive • We can ask, receive, use with wisdom to enrich the health services and society.

  12. Proverbs edify • “Who can find a virtuous ‘Nurse’ for his or her worth is far above rubies.” Proverbs 31:10 • “An excellent ‘Nurse’ is the crown in our ‘profession’.” Proverbs 12:4 • “Give her of the fruit of her hands, and let her own works praise her in the gates.” Proverbs 31:31
