  1. CAESURA A pause in a line of verse dictated by sense or natural speech rhythm.

  2. LYRIC Words that accompany music. (Since Beowulf was passed down orally, most of it could have/would have been sung)

  3. EPIC • A long narrative poem about the exploits of a national hero.

  4. EPIC HERO • A main character in an epic whose legendary heroic actions are central to his/her culture, race or nation.

  5. ALLITERATION • Repetition of consonants in words close together.

  6. Alliteration Example • Home is the sailor, home from the sea, And the Hunter home from the hill.

  7. EPITHET • A term used to characterize a person or thing

  8. EPITHET EXAMPLE • …Beowulf, son of Ecgetheow.

  9. ANIMISM • The belief in the existence of individual spirits that inhabit natural objects and phenoma.

  10. MOTIFS • Reoccurring thematic element in an artistic or literary work.

  11. ELEGY • A poem or song composed especially as a lament for a deceased person.

  12. ARCHETYPE • An ideal example of a type. (Beowulf is an archetype of an epic hero)

  13. Beowulf Characters • Beowulf- a Geat, king of the Geats • Grendel- man-eating monster who lives at the bottom of a foul mere, or mountain lake. • Herot- golden guest hall built by King Hrothgar, the Danish ruler. • Hrothgar- King of the Danes, builder of Herot. • Wiglaf- A Geat warrior, one of Beowulf’s select band and the only one to help him in his final fight.

  14. Beowulf Vocabulary • Resolute- firm determination • Vehemently- harsh or forceful • Infallible- certain or sure. • Furled-to wrap around or to roll up • Lavish- expensive. • Assail- attack forcefully • Extolled- to praise highly
