EPIC • A long narrative poem about the exploits of a national hero.
EPIC HERO • A main character in an epic whose legendary heroic actions are central to his/her culture, race or nation.
ALLITERATION • Repetition of consonants in words close together.
Alliteration Example • Home is the sailor, home from the sea, And the Hunter home from the hill.
EPITHET • A term used to characterize a person or thing
EPITHET EXAMPLE • …Beowulf, son of Ecgetheow.
ANIMISM • The belief in the existence of individual spirits that inhabit natural objects and phenoma.
MOTIFS • Reoccurring thematic element in an artistic or literary work.

Beowulf Characters • Beowulf- a Geat, king of the Geats • Grendel- man-eating monster who lives at the bottom of a foul mere, or mountain lake. • Herot- golden guest hall built by King Hrothgar, the Danish ruler. • Hrothgar- King of the Danes, builder of Herot. • Wiglaf- A Geat warrior, one of Beowulf’s select band and the only one to help him in his final fight.
