Brief history • 1993: founded by • Telecom Finland, Helsinki Telephone Co, Eunet • 10Mbps Ethernet switch • registry for ccTLD (.fi) • 1996: upgrade to 155-ATM switch (FICIX-1) • 1997: ccTLD registry moved to FICORA (government agency) • 1999: additional IX founded (FICIX-2) • Cisco 8540 • 155-ATM and 622-ATM available • 2001: an association founded • 11 operators signed FICIX EIX-41

Status report • 14 members today • carrier independent IX • 155-ATM (FICIX1) and 155/622-ATM (FICIX2) available • IPv4 & IPv6 VC matrix in place • KPNQwest is current service provider for physical maintenance • structure of the association: • annually elected trustees • not-for-profit organisation • Traffic statistics • http://stats1.kpnqwest.fi/ficix/ • traffic peaks daily: 1.5 Gbps FICIX EIX-41

Joining • Apply for a membership from <ficix@ficix.fi> • have to be present at both peering points • FICIX-1: http://www.innopoli.fi/ • FICIX-2: http://www.digita.fi/english/ • 2 member classes • full member / no peering agreements needed (collective) • an applicant has to provide access services in finland • supporting member / peering argreements needed • practically any organization can join • no co-location space nor fibers / transmission available from IX • available from several providers to both IX’s FICIX EIX-41

  5. Costs • Setup fee: 1000 EUR • membership: 100 EUR/mo • port: 155-ATM port: 500 EUR/mo • port: 622-ATM port: 1000 EUR/mo FICIX EIX-41

  6. Activities • FICIX-1 upgrade to gigE • should be running Q2/02 at latest • expected port cost is 500 EUR • 155-ATM will be available until Q4/02 • IPv6 is already in place and peerings do exist • multicast is something to think about … • network security related co-operation with CERT-FI • possible relocation of FICIX-1 during 2002 • could provide also co-location space • located somewhere at capital area FICIX EIX-41
