  3. Pictures and facts • built by the Pennsylvania Railroad and operated by Ellsworth Statler • It opened on January 25, 1919 • The Chef salad may have been created by Hotel Pennsylvania head chef Jacques Roser in the 1920s

Pennsylvania Station • major intercity train station and a major commuter rail hub in New York City • one of the busiest rail stations in the world • hub for inbound and outbound railroad traffic in New York City • the New York City Subway system also has multiple lines that connect to the station • Serving 300,000 passengers a day at a rate of up to a thousand every 90 seconds,it is the busiest passenger transportation facility in the United States • Connects people travelling from New Jersey and Connecticut

Madison Square Garden • multi-purpose indoor arena in the New York City borough of Manhattan • located at 8th Avenue, between 31st and 33rd Streets • situated on top of Pennsylvania Station • Opened on February 11, 1968 • longest active major sporting facility in the New York metropolitan area • fourth incarnation of the arena in the city

  7. HIstory • Originally known as, “Longacre Square” • In 1904 – the New York Times moved its headquarters into a building on Longacre Square, and the square was renamed to One Times Square • Known as “Crossroads of the World,” “the Great White Way,” and “Canyon of Heroes”

What is it? • Theatre district (Broadway) • “Midtown” Manhattan • Home to major brands and shops, theatre district, New Year’s Eve ball drop • Contains over 50 neon signs • Used to be the site of MTVs TRL • Home to many TV studios • Easiest place to see from the air in NYC because of the lights

  10. History of the Brooklyn Bridge • Idea created by John Roebling • Built from 1869 – 1883 • Connects Manhattan and Brooklyn

  11. Con’t • Out of 600 workers, 20 died • On May 24, 1883, 150,000 people crossed the bridge. • Cost about $15 million in total

  12. How was it Built? • Wooden boxes with no bottoms, were sunk & compressed air was pumped into them • After sinking, the boxes were filled with concrete *Caisson

  13. Con’t • 4 cables supported the runway, these cables took 1 year and 4 months to spin • Roebling used steel because it is stronger than iron
