Con’t • Out of 600 workers, 20 died • On May 24, 1883, 150,000 people crossed the bridge. • Cost about $15 million in total
How was it Built? • Wooden boxes with no bottoms, were sunk & compressed air was pumped into them • After sinking, the boxes were filled with concrete *Caisson
Con’t • 4 cables supported the runway, these cables took 1 year and 4 months to spin • Roebling used steel because it is stronger than iron
