  2. Objectives • Discuss pelvic exam setup • Describe pelvic exam assist • documentation

  3. Pelvic Exam Set-up • Patient gown; warm blankets • Clean exam gloves • Vaginal speculum appropriate to patient body size, and the light source for disposable speculums. • K-Y jelly • Head lamp; overhead lamp • 4x4s; ring speculum (if vaginal bleeding present) • Genprobe unisex specimen collection kit, KOH specimen container, pink sterile and saline tubule • Large cotton swabs • Sterile cotton swabs • Linen for post-exam cleansing usually the disposable warm towelettes.

  4. Pelvic Exam Assist Procedural Steps • Close door • Place patient in stirrups room 6 or 7 in ED • Open Genprobe kit and tear open swabs keeping cotton tip sterile • Assist physician as needed • Label specimens appropriately • Provide cleansing cloth for patient
