2. Brief Background Generic refers to Genre
Roots of generic criticism can be traced to Aristotle
Classical rhetoricians divide discourse into three types
Deliberative, Forensic, Epideictic
These are all genres of rhetoric
3. What is Generic Criticism? Discovering commonalities in rhetorical patterns across recurring situations
Rhetoricians use genres to create messages in a rhetorical situation that audiences can identify
-example:
Eulogy speech
4. Basic Elements of Generic Criticism Situational elements-context of the rhetoric
Substantive characteristics-content of the rhetoric
Stylistic characteristics-the form of the rhetoric
Organizing principle-the process of the above elements working interdependently to create rhetoric within a genre
5. Three Options of Generic Criticism Generic criticism involves three different options, each contribute to different understandings of genres.
Three options are:
Generic Description
Generic Participation
Generic Application
6. Generic Description The purpose is to define a genre and formulate theoretical constructs about its characteristics.
In this process there a four steps:
1. Observe similarities in rhetorical responses to particular situations
2. Collect artifacts that occur in similar situations
3. Analyze the artifacts to discover if they share characteristics
4. Formulate and organize principles of the genre.
7. Example Four Romantic Comedies:
8. Generic Participation Use to determine which artifact fits in which genres
Test an artifact against characteristics of a genre
Usually pick an artifact you dont think belongs in a certain genre
Process:
1. Describe the perceived situational requirements, the substantive and stylistic strategies, and organizing principle of a genre
2. Describe the situational requirements, the substantive and stylistic strategies, and organizing principle of an artifact.
3. Comparing the characteristics of the artifact with those of the genre to discover if the artifact belongs in that genre.
9. Example
10. Generic Application Applies the situational, stylistic and substantive elements that characterize an artifact that participates in a genre to acess it.
Apply the generic characteristics to the artifact to see if it is a good example of the genre
11. Four Basic Steps of Generic Application Describing the perceived situational requirements, substantive and stylistic strategies, and organizing principle of a genre
Identifying the perceived situational requirements, substantive and stylistic strategies, and organizing principle of an artifact that is representative of that genre
Comparing the characteristics of the artifact to the genre
Evaluating the artifact according to its success in fulfilling the required characteristics of the genre
12. Why Use This Method? Using generic application to evaluate an artifact draws insights about the effectiveness of an artifact in perceived situations
If an artifact violates a preconceived response than it increases the ineffectiveness of the artifact to the particular genre
13. Example Generic Violation:
14. Try It Out!
15. Conclusion Generic Criticism is used to discover commonalities in rhetorical patterns across reoccurring situations
Three Options:
Generic Description, Participation, Application
Generic Criticism is useful because each option has the ability to build on one another for a complete analysis
Generic Criticism is restrictive due to specific goal orientation, therefore, limiting creativity.
