Pakistan Microfinance Network’s Experience in Social Performance Reporting Presented at the Social Performance Networks Working Group meeting July 01, 2010
SP Reporting- PMN’s Role Financial Transparency Social Transparency Text goes he • Advocacy with members • Data collection from members • Assistance to members • Consistency check on SP reports • Transfer reports to MIX
Analysis of SP Data • Most members only able to report on Part I of the report • Variety of tools being used for client poverty data, making comparisons difficult • Plan to publish an SP report on the sector in 2010
Monitoring Members PMN’s role in direct monitoring will be limited: • more of a facilitating function • not be viewed as a regulator • conflict of interest • advocate with policy makers and regulators on monitoring the double bottom line CHALLENGE Availability of a cost effective and standardized monitoring mechanism that can be used on an on-going basis
Achievements to Date • One reporting cycle completed (FY2008) • 11 of 23 members reported • 9 of these awarded silver award for social reporting transparency • Reporting cycle for FY2009 underway • SP reporting and tools gaining momentum in the sector • Use of PPI • Social ratings • 100 percent membership reporting to the MIX • Annual publication of the sector’s social performance report • PMN internationally recognized for successful promotion of social transparency
Future Plans • Build the sector’s capacity • Institutionalize reporting processes within the Network & Members • Publish the first SP report in 2010 • Encourage national networks in South-Asia to promote reporting within their membership • Continue collaboration with international stakeholders such as the SPTF
Lessons Learnt • Buy-in at the top is essential! • Need a ‘champion’ within the member as well as the Network • Slow and steady… • Need to have a different approach depending on the member interest and capacity levels • Awards are a good motivator – generates positive competition within members • Need a monitoring system – biggest gap at the moment
