Elek’s sewing- beautiful bedspread June 2009
This is Elek. She comes from Sudan, in Africa. She is a student at Carlton Neighbourhood Learning Centre.
This is Elek’s beautiful bedspread. She made it completely by hand.
Elek uses designs from nature, flowers, fruit, animals, leaves and sometimes vegetables. She always makes a new design.
This design is of a rabbit surrounded by blue, purple and red flowers and green leaves.
These grey stitches are the rabbit. The stitches are very small.
In English we call this sewing to make a picture or pattern “embroidery”.
The rabbit is grey and white stripes, like a zebra. It has very big ears. It’s an African rabbit.
Elek is showing Denise her bedspread. It took two months to complete. She worked a little every day.
We were very interested to see Elek’s embroidery. She is very clever.
