Chapter 6 • Laboratory Studies • Urine tests • specific gravity • pH • glucose • ketones • nitrites • bilirubin and urobilinogen • leukocyte esterase • centrifuge • sediments • casts • crystals • Hematologic Studies • Complete blood count with Differential – (CBC with diff.) • White blood count (WBC) • Red blood count (RBC) • Hemoglobin (Hgb) • Hematocrit (Hct) • Platelet count (PLT) • MCV • MCH • MCHC • RDW
Chapter 6 • CBC with diff. • Segmented neutrophils Dictated as segs • Band neutrophils • Dictated as bands • Lymphocytes • Dictated as lymphs • Monocytes • Dictated as monos • Eosinophils • Dictated as eos • Basophils • Dictated as basos • Example: (Employer Preference) • The CBC showed WBCs of 6500 with 60% segs, 8% bands, 21% lymphs, 7% monos, 2% eos, and 2% basos. • OR • The CBC showed a white blood count of 6500 with 60 neutrophils, 8 bands, 12 lymphocytes, 7 monocytes, 2 eosinophils, and 2 basophils.

Book of Style Page 118 • Laboratory Values 6.2.13 page 118 • Use commas to separate values of a single panel or test. Use periods to separate the values of unrelated tests. In the example below, the CBC values are grouped together in one sentence; the chemistry values in another. • Example • Laboratory Data: White count 5.2, hemoglobin 15, and hematocrit 39. Sodium 149, potassium 4.2, and chloride 103.
Book of Style Page 245 • Lab Values 10.3.8 page 245 • Use arabic numerals and decimals to express lab values. • WBC 5.2, hemoglobin 14, and hematocrit 33. • Sodium 139, potassium 4.6, chloride 106, and bicarb 28. • Use commas to separate values of a single panel or test. Use periods to separate the values of unrelated laboratories tests.
Book of Style Page 245 • Do not use a comma to separate a lab value from the test it describes. • White count 5300 • Not • White count, 5300 (no comma) • When a lab value is expressed as a percentage, use whatever form is dictated. • D: Polys 58% T: Polys 58% • D: Polys 0.58. T: Polys 0.58. • D: Polys 58. T: Polys 58.
Book of Style Page 322 • Laboratory Tests 14.2.1 • CK-MB • tPA • acyl CoA • HDL • HDL1 /HDL2 • HDL-C • HDL-R • HMG Coa • IDL • IDL-C • IDL-R • LDL • LDL-C • LDL-R • LPL • LDL • LDL-C • LDL-R • LPL • LPL188 • LP-X • LRP1 /LRP2 • VHDL • VLDL-C • VLDL-R

Recast the sentence to avoid this usage. • We are going to x-ray her again. • Plain vs. plane films: The correct term is plain which refers to an x-ray that has been done without contrast. It is not a reference to a directional plane or surface. • Plain film of the abdomen was negative.
