What are the Common Core State Standards? • A multi-state effort to provide a clear and consistent framework of instruction. • These rigorous education standards • establish a set of shared goals and • expectations for what students should • understand and be able to do in • grades K- 12 in order to be • prepared for success in • college and the workplace.

What are the Common Core State Standards? • Were developed in collaboration with teachers, administrators, researchers, and experts. • Provides for robust instruction that is relevant to the real world. • Maryland was one of the first States in the nation to adopt the CCSS in reading/English language arts and mathematics.

  6. Major Shifts • in Literacy • Building knowledge by reading complex fiction and non-fiction texts • Reading, writing, speaking and listening activities grounded in evidence from text(s)

  8. What Types of Reading Will My Child Encounter ? 50% literary texts and 50% informational texts in elementary school 40% literary text and 60% informational texts in middle school 30% literary texts and 70% Informational in high school

  14. PARCC Assessments (Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Career) • 2014-2015 • 2. Computer Based • 3. Two Components • Performance Based Assessment (PBA) • Short and extended response • Given after 75% of the school year (around March) • End of Year Assessment (EOY) • Mostly short answer • Given after 90% of the school year (around May)

ELA PARCC Assessments • Types of Tasks • Type I: Narrative Task • Type II: Literary Analysis Task • Type III: Simulated Research Task • Each task will require students to: • read one or more texts • answer several short comprehension and vocabulary questions • write and essay that requires them to draw evidence form the text(s)

Math PARCC Assessments • Types of Tasks • Type I: Assess concepts, skills, and procedures • Common Core State Standards tested • 68% of score • PBA and EOY • Type II: Assess expression mathematical reasoning • Common Core State Standards tested • Standards 3 & 6 of Mathematical Practices • 17% of score • PBA • Type III: Assess modeling & applications • Common Core State Standards tested • Standards 1, 2, 4, 5, 7, and 8 of Mathematical Practices • 15% of score • PBA
