  3. Beverages • Our bodies need fluids to work correctly • We lose fluids through breathing, perspiring, and through time • Need to be replaced

  4. Beverages • Sugar in our diets • Liquid candy • Do these sugar sweetened beverages really cause weight gain? • Cut out calories from somewhere else

  5. Sugar • Naturally Occurring • Fruit • Juice • Milk • Provides calories with nutrients

  6. Sugar • Added Sugar • Does not have nutrients • Only provides calories

  7. Sports Drinks • Not a substitute for water • Can use with water for long, hard activity

  8. Energy Drinks • Contain 21-34 grams of sugar per 8 ounce • Increase your heart rate

  9. Milk • 1% or fat free • 2 cups daily • Calcium • Vitamin D • Protein

  10. Fruit Juice • Be sure it is 100% fruit juice • Limit 4-6 ounces per day

  11. Summer Time and Physical Activity • In hotter months, be sure to stay hydrated • Lose 1-2 gallons of fluid each day • Physical activity increases fluid loss

  12. Using Special Water Cup or Bottle • Attractive container can encourage consumption • Small visual changes can help you drink more water • Keep water bottles in fridge, instead of sugar sweetened beverages

  13. Suggestions For Low-Calorie Beverages • Add slices of lemon, lime, watermelon, or cucumber to water • Add a splash of 100% fruit juice to water • Add water flavor enhancements
