Restorative justice Solutions to crime:
In contrast to incarceration and retribution a new model of justice is developing. Christie puts forward the concept of RESTORATIVE JUSTICE which puts the victim and the community at the heart of the solution s to crime. • The 3 elements of restorative justice are: • It seeks to put right the harm that has been done. • It seeks to balance the need of the victim with the need for accountability fo the offender • It seeks to ensure that the victim is involved in the decision making process.
According to the Home Office the process of restorative justice is based on tth 3 R;s: • Restoration – offenders should apologies and make amends for the harm done. • Reintegration – offenders should be brought back into the community after they have paid their dept. • Responsibility – offenders take responsibility for the consequences of their actions.
LINK TO GOVERNMENT POLICY: • Restorative justice has influenced many government policy initiatives such as: • Victim- Offender mediation. • Citizens panels and community boards. • Sentencing circles • Conferencing and court-based schemes.
