This annual review provides an overview of the advancements in remote sensing data and algorithm development conducted by SeaBASS and NOMAD. It covers topics such as data submission policy, data concentration time-series, holdings for the MODIS-Aqua era, and new measurements and questions for archival. The review also discusses the reorganization and expansion of NOMAD holdings, upcoming workshops, and the long-term goal of achieving community consensus on producing global-scale, remotely sensed IOP products.

Looking forward new measurements, new questions … new strategy for archival? database issues: physical data management can be similar but, is SeaBASS (cal/val driven) appropriate? new measurements ~ different products, questions, and goals same archive structure, parallel structure, separate entity? data products issues: requires active community participation expansion of expertise (e.g., @ OBPG) identification of data products (and goals) consolidation of product formats, units, etc. other issues?
NOMAD SeaBASS holdings post-processed and reorganized into near-surface satellite validation and algorithm development data set currently consists of 3467 observations of: Lw + Es + chl, with ETOPO2 bathymetry and OISST Kd, IOPs, Wt, and Sal where available absorption by spectroscopy only, bb to be reviewed new data products in Version 2 include: POC, Kpar, and depths of 37, 10%, and 1% light levels (of PAR) expected to be publicly released by end of May 2008 http://seabass.gsfc.nasa.gov/cgi-bin/nomad.cgi

Ocean Optics XIX IOP Algorithm Workshop will be held in conjunction with this year’s Ocean Optics XIX Conference (Lucca, Italy) from 3-4 Oct 2008 long term goal: achieve community consensus on the most effective algorithmic approach for producing global scale, remotely sensed IOP products extend the IOCCG (Algorithm Working Group) effort to: (1) dissect algorithm components (parameterization, inversion, optimization) to identify the most effective method of producing global satellite products (2) refine associated uncertainty budgets (3) identify and remediate satellite inversion failure conditions desired outcome: community investment in consolidated algorithm development and routine production of satellite-derived IOP data products
Ocean Optics XIX participation (logistically) limited to ~25 people specifically, community members with established algorithms goal is to ensure that participants represent spectrum of existing approaches and relevant backgrounds workshop to be culmination of analyses conducted from Jun to Sep, and will focus on interpretation and assimilation of results (with specific focus on recently distributed series of questions) evaluation data sources include NOMAD v2 and Level-2 and -3 satellite files (e.g., SeaWiFS, MODIS-Aqua, MERIS) Web site developed by OBPG to distribute documentation and software and to catalog and consolidate ongoing results
