The Northwest Territory • Territory – Is land that belongs to a country but is not a state of that country.
The Northwest Territory Land Ordinance of 1785 Northwest Ordinance of 1787 This law stated that at some time in the future the Northwest Territory would be divided into three, four, or five new states. One of these states would be Michigan. Until then the President would appoint a governor and other officials for the territory. Made slavery illegal. People who owned slaves could keep them. • This law stated that the land of the Northwest Territory would be measured and mapped once the Native Americans had sold it to the United States government.

BATTLE AT FALLEN TIMBERS Pioneers began moving into the Northwest Territory as soon as the British were defeated. Pioneer:A pioneer is one of the first people to move into a frontier area.
Battle At Fallen Timbers Anthony Wayne was the leader of the American army in the Battle of Fallen Timbers. He was sent by President George Washington to try and stop the Native Americans who were attacking the pioneers because they were desperate to save their land.
Battle at Fallen Timbers General Anthony Wane: Chosen by George Washington to stop the fighting between Native American Indians and the pioneers Chief Bad Bird: A Chippewa chief spoke for the Ottawa, Chippewa, and Potawatomi of Michigan. Promised that these groups would no longer fight against Americans.
Battle At Fallen Timbers A tornado had recently hit the area where the battle was fought. The tornado knocked down many of the trees. This is the reason why the battle came to be known as the Battle at Fallen Timbers.
BATTLE AT FALLEN TIMBERS Treaty of Greenville: This was the first of many land treaties the Native Americans would make with United States Government. Native American chiefs met with Wayne at Greenville, Ohio. Bad Bird promised that these groups would no longer fight against the Americans. The chiefs also agreed to give up large areas of land in southeastern Michigan.
Detroit Grows When the British left Detroit in 1796 it was a village of about 500 people. The population was made up of many different groups English Scottish Irish Dutch French American Asian African Native Americans The French who first came to Detroit brought African and Indian slaves as did the British army officers who arrived after them.
Michigan TerritoryThe population of the Northwest Territory grew rapidly as Indian lands went up for sale. Ohio: 1803 Michigan: 1803 Population more than 3,000 people living in and around Detroit. Michiganians asked national government to make Michigan a territory. 1805 U.S. government agreed to form the Michigan territory. Only part of the Upper Peninsula was included in the Michigan Territory. William Hull was Michigan’s territorial governor. • Population over 60,000. • Once a population reached this number it could ask to become a new state. • Ohio became the 17th state.

DETROIT IN FLAMES Just a few days before William Hull was to arrive , Detroit burnt to the ground! June 11, 1805 on a windy day ashes from a man cleaning his pipe blew into a pile of hay in a stable. The hay caught fire and spread from building to building. People hauled what they could to the Detroit River. By 1 PM only 1 of the towns nearly 200 buildings remained standing.
Detroit In Flames Augusts Woodward a territorial judge had plans on how to rebuild Detroit. Studied plans for the capital of Washington D.C. He drew up a similar plan for Detroit. Circular parks and wide avenues extending to make Detroit a bustling frontier city.
A NEW TERRITORY Detroit fire was a sad way to start off the new Michigan Territory. Citizens quickly rebuilt their capital and the future looked bright for this new territory.
