  2. Netherlands • We always had trouble fighting the sea! • We wanted to keep out the water and reclaim more land. • We built dykes and sluices to keep the water out.

  4. How to drain? • Land below sea level needed the water pumped up from it. • 1st: built a dyke around the land • 2nd: built windmills on the dyke • 3rd: windmills pumped the water out. • The State passed various patents for different types of windmills and pumps.

  6. Paying for this: • Drainage was expensive • People had to invest in it. • Investors made profit from renting out the farms they built on the drained land. • Investments were made by selling land that would be drained.
