  2. Sharia Law “He it is Who sinds down clear messages to his servant, That he may bring you forth from darkness to light.” -Qur’an 57:9 • “way” or “path” • From Qur’an and Hadith • Varies based on region or country • Deals with matters of politics, economics, family, sexuality and social issues

  3. Sharia Law in UK • 2.4 million Muslims in UK • Sharia courts given power to rule on Muslim civil cases in 2008 • Courts set up in London, Birmingham, Bradford and Manchester

  4. UK opposition to Sharia • Sharia criticized by many British media sources • Concerns about a “parallel legal system for some Muslims • Legal status of Sharia faces criticism even from within British government

  5. UK opposition cont. • Douglas Murray, the director of the Centre for Social Cohesion: “I think it’s appalling. I don’t think arbitration that is done by sharia should ever be endorsed or enforced by the British state.” • Free speech only applies to expressing ideas • Does not apply to action/law

  6. German Sharia • Heavily influenced by the clerical organization in Turkey • Majority of German Muslims are of Turkish descent • Problems for several reasons • Prejudice against Turks • Resistance to foreign influence

  10. Conclusion • Sharia law and Muslim customs bring ideas of terrorism and extremism • Lack of understanding leads to fear • Nationalism • Controversy over Sharia law is clash of cultures • Secular vs. religious
