  1. Measurements Mass and Length

  2. What is the metric unit for mass? • The most common metric units for mass are the milligram, gram, and kilogram. • The gram is a metric unit of mass equal to one thousandth of a kilogram and one thousand milligrams. • 1 g = .001 kg • 1 g = 1000 mg • The metric system of measurement is the system used in scientific observation and experimentation. • The metric system is an internationally recognized system of measurement.

  3. What is the “standard” unit for mass? • The most common “standard” units for measuring mass are the ounce and the pound. • The ounce is a unit of weight equal to one sixteenth of a pound (lb). • 16 ounces (oz) = 1 pound (lb) or 0.0625 lbs = 1 oz • Ounces are part of the “standard” or “customary” system of measurement. This is the system typically used in the US. It is not the typical system of measurement for all countries!!

  4. What is the metric unit for length? • The kilometer, meter, centimeter, and millimeter are the most common metric units for length. • The meter is a metric unit of length equal to one thousandth of a kilometer, one hundred centimeters, and one thousand millimeters. • 1 m = .001 km • 1 m = 100 cm • 1 m = 1000 mm

  5. What is the “standard” unit for length? • The most common standard units for measuring length are the mile, yard, foot, and inch. • 1 foot (ft) = 12 inches (in) • 1 yard (yd) = 36 (in) • 1 yard (yd) = 3 feet (ft) • 1 mile (mi) = 5280 feet (ft) • 1 mile (mi) = 1760 yards (yd)

  6. Measurement • Length: distance between 2 points, measured in meters. • Mass: amount of matter contained in a object, measured in grams. • Volume: amount of space an object takes up - measuring liquids, unit is liter. • Density: mass per unit of volume, measured in g/ml • Area: length times width, measured in cm2

  7. Metric / Standard Comparison • There are 28.349 grams (g) in 1 ounce (oz). • There are 453.492 grams (g) in 1 pound (lb). • There are 2.2 pounds (lb) in 1 kilogram (kg).

  8. Metric / Standard Comparison • There are 2.54 centimeters (cm) in 1 inch (in). • There are .91 meters (m) in 1 yard (yd). • There are 1.6 kilometers (km) in 1 mile (mi). • There are 3.28 feet (ft) in 1 meter (m).

  10. Now… Let’s try some Conversions FUN,FUN!!

  11. Things to Remember… • King Henry Died By Drinking Chocolate Milk. • This is an acronym to help you remember where to place your decimal and what prefix to use.

  12. Here’s the Order…. • Kilo: (King) 1000 • Hecto: (Henry) 100 • Deka: (Died) 10 • Base: (By) 1 • Deci: (Drinking) 1/10 • Centi: (Chocolate) 1/100 • Milli: (Milk) 1/1000
