Presented by Oscar Kibazohi (PhD) Environmental Protection and Management Services (EPMS) Dar Es Salaam- Tanzania. Impacts of sea level rise on Coastal Fresh water supply
Background • Five coastal regions covers 15% of mainland Tanzania. • Population of this area is about 8 millions, with a growth rate ranging between two and six per cent. • The coastline stretches to 800 km long. • Coastline is vulnerable to climate change due to the anticipated rise in sea level, floods, coral bleaching, etc.
Project Location • The project will be conducted in the Zinga division. • A village, Mlingotini 10 km from the Bagamoyo town, with a total of 3350 households has been identified. • Source of water mainly is through wells
Socio economic Source of Income are mainly: • Agriculture, fishing and livestock keeping. • In general, people in these communities are very poor
Impacts of the sea level rise • Some of the wells affected by sea level rise
Project Objectives • Assist affected communities to obtain new fresh water sources
Project Activities • Creating awareness to the communities on the cause and impacts and explore their adjustments to the problems; • Identifying wells that have been inundated with sea water along the coast. • Survey for alternative water sources for communities that need new water sources
Project Activities • Rehabilitation of the traditional wells not yet inundated with sea water intrusion; • Construction of new water wells or other appropriate solution for new fresh water supply.
Issues - Opportunities • Funding from SSN Trust to develop the project for further funding from donor • The International community on its 12 CoP last year, identified adaptation as one area that needs support
Issues – concerned & challenges • Designing appropriate solution to the problem • News water source • Technology to be used • Availability of funding to implement the project from donors such as UNDP SGP, African Development Bank- Tunisia, SADDC etc. • Sustainability
Conclusion • The impacts is not only to the availability of fresh drinking water, I may lead to land conflicts, and water bone diseases as well. • The project will assist the communities affected with inundation of sea water to adapt • Lesson and success will be very used for duplication to other communities in Tanzania and other countries
