How to design a scary place! It’s all about color and light
Ghosts! • Pareidolia is a psychological phenomenon involving a vague and random stimulus (often an image or sound) being perceived as significant. • Patternicity - the tendency to find patterns in both meaningful and meaningless noise. Our brains are belief engines, built to make the connections between stimuli. • Infrasound – low frequency sound (below 20htz) that might cause people to feel awe or fear. Can be linked to the experience of sensing the supernatural • Carbon Monoxide – carbon monoxide poisoning can cause feelings of anxiety, visual and auditory hallucinations, and other “supernatural” phenomena.
What makes something scary? • Unknown, unseen, undefinable • Uncanny valley • Using what people “know” against them • Stereotypical environmental stimuli – the entirety of the experience, not just one piece • Making it personal!
How are we going to create this environment? • A better question might be: “How am I going to force an audience to feel a certain way?”
