  2. MRI (Magnetic Resonance screening) is a body imaging technique used in radiology. MRI helps in understanding the anatomical and physiological process of the body. Though there are other scans available for diagnosis, MRI is preferred for its detailed images. MRI being a non invasive procedure allows the comfort of the patients and doctor for evaluating without much effort. Where an MRI is used? Any part of the body or whole skeleton can be imaged using a MRI. Brain scans (for Aneurysms, Multiple sclerosis, trauma) are most known of course. MRI can provide detailed and quality images in any of the following cases like blockages in the blood vessels or measuring the thickness of heart walls and valves, studying internal organs.

  3. What and Why a silent MRI? In Spite of its preciseness and quality, MRI scanning involves a major problem “NOISE” other than Claustrophobia. MRI scanning involves high magnetic field and computer generated radio waves, there will be recurring thumping and tapping sounds inside. This produces high sound inside the tube and often patients are given ear plugs to avoid any damage. In the case of children, sedation insufficiency has become a major problem. One may wonder how much noise a highly maintained machine could produce!. But it was reported to be around 110 – 120 dB which is approximately the sound produced by a thunder. A typical MRI can last anywhere between 15 mins to more than 1 hour. At this level of

  4. sound, patients reported problems with verbal communication, hearing impairment, sedation insufficiency along with increased discomfort. This causes stress in patients. Acoustic dampening (using sound proof materials) and reducing MRI performance are examples of few methods to overcome the noise. But GE healthcare has come up with Silent MRI where the sound of scanning has been reduced to ambient room noise. The acoustic noise produced by gradient excitation is reduced by 3D scanning and rebuilding technique and this technique is called Silenz This technique seems to reduce noise by lowering the gradient excitation (rapid current alterations between the gradient coils) levels. The noise produced is directly related to the excitation levels and this reduction of excitation reduces noise without Compromising image quality.

  5. Pros of Silent MRI The major benefit is comfort for patients, doctors and technicians. This also helps researchers during brain activation or stimulation studies as they can communicate because of the canceled noise. Neither the quality of the image nor the scan time are compromised when compared to ordinary MRI. Considering the patients’ comfort, ordinary MRI is being replaced already by various renowned hospitals.
