Study In Canada -A Complete Guide For Indian Student Canada is the largest country in North America and is a famous immigration spot, mainly because of its immigrant- friendly policies and opportunities available to work and settle in the country. Indians have particularly grown fond of the snow-capped roads of Canada and have settled around in large numbers, throughout generations. Canada, in general, is known for its acceptance of all races, and mingling cultures from around the world into one big celebration! Well, who doesn’t want some celebration in life? AND SO, BEGAN THE QUEST TO SETTLE IN THIS ‘OPEN-MINDED’ COUNTRY… Let’s start with the basics.
You are a student and you wish to study in Canada. We won’t go into the why’s since we’ve covered it initially and so, let’s move to the how… Requirements for studying in Canada – STAGE 1 — Language Test and past academic records As an Indian student looking to study/settle in Canada, the process varies for different universities, but almost all of them require you to take a test on your basic knowledge and understanding of the English language. The most common language exams for studying in Canada are – 1.The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) — IELTS is the most accepted test score in almost all Canadian Universities and is the most popular amongst all Canada aspirants. The fees for appearing in the test is Rs 14,000 and students can appear unlimited times. 2.Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) — TOEFL is also a commonly accepted test score. The fees
for TOEFL is Rs 13,625 and cannot be given twice in 12 days. 3.Pearson Test of English (PTE) — PTE is another commonly accepted test that has the same rules and almost the same fees as TOEFL. When to Give the Test? Most colleges in Canada begin taking admissions in September and October, and thus it’s recommended to get done with your language test almost a year before the admission. Other Requirements — Before applying to a University in Canada, you are required to firstly complete 18 years of age for a degree program. Also, a minimum of 65% and above for humanities in 12th, or 70%, or above for Science/Commerce students is mandatory to qualify for admissions. However, some Foundation and Diploma courses are available for students securing below 60% as well. STAGE 2 —Search for the Right University and Place Once all the initial requirements are done, we move on to the next part…i.e. Choosing the Right University. Canada, as we mentioned before is a vast country with 5 different time
zones and more than 100 Universities. So, choosing the right university and the right place to live is crucial for any immigrant and thus, this search supposedly takes the longest. Now as per demographics, most of the Indians, 70% to be precise, stay in the metropolitan cities of Toronto and Vancouver. Vancouver resides the famous ‘Little India’, a place where Indian families live for generations. A similar setup can be found on ‘Gerrard Street’ in Toronto. But for students looking to study, the first focus point should be on the type of education. Now, vocational courses are more beneficial than degree courses in Canada, as it provides more employment opportunities, but, Universities such as the University of Alberta, the University of British Colombia, and Simon Fraser University, just to name a few, are some of the reputed universities around Canada popular for its full- time academic degree courses with excellent placements as well. Most of the colleges are in the cities of Toronto, British Colombia, and Montreal. The in-demand higher education courses amongst immigrants are PG Diploma courses in Business Management, Media, Engineering, and hospitality. Proper research is needed on a particular university regarding their admission requirements and placements and
its surrounding area for accommodation purposes. Metropolitans like Toronto and Vancouver have a relatively higher cost of living than the adjoining suburbs, though most of the colleges provide residential space around the college campus. STAGE 3 — Once the application is accepted by the University of your choice The university would require your legal documents, academic documents, Letter of recommendations (LORs), Statement of purpose (SOP), Resumes, and of course your language test scores. Once the university approves your application, they will send you an acceptance email which will assist your next step…i.e. applying for a student visa. What are the requirements for a student visa to Canada? 1.Proof of Acceptance from College — The approval sent by your applied college for admission is needed during the visa process. 2.Proof of Financial stability — The financial records will be accessed by the embassy to see if the person is capable of managing himself financially. Family income,
bank statements, and information regarding any loans taken previously will be required. The visa application cycle generally takes 3–4 weeks for approval, which also requires a medical examination of the applying candidate. When to start with the Admission process? As mentioned earlier, most of the colleges start their intakes in September, and so, its recommended to start with the admission process 6 months before the application deadline. For a September intake, the processes should be done with, by June. Depending upon your field of interest, you might need another test score with you apart from the language test score. Some of them are – 1.Graduate Management Aptitude Test (GMAT) — GMAT is the most accepted test score for MBA courses all over the world and Canada is no exception. It’s an online exam and costs Rs 18,700. The minimum and maximum score range is 200 and 800 respectively.
