PROJECT PRESENTATION2.5D Matte Painting Mikael Widegren gsCEPT 2007
INTRODUCTION - Matte paintings are used to create virtual movie sets or extend current sets. - They can be either hand-painted or a composite of existing photographs. “2.5D” - A technique used to add a third dimension to a flat photo or picture, allowing camera movement within it. - This makes it necessary to add animated objects inside the photo, to enhance the illusion of life (such as birds, clouds and other elements).
PROJECT GOALS - To create an impressive establishing shot of an environment. - Apply the concept of 2.5D imagery to a landscape. - Learning more about the matte painting techniques used in modern films today. PHASES PHASE 1: Concept art. PHASE 2: Research. PHASE 3: Production.
PHASE 1 – Concept Art Goal: to decide the setting and mood of the final piece.

PHASE 2 – Camera mapping / 2.5D Research Goal: to become familiar with the use of camera mapping and 2.5D images. -> Original photo 3D scene set up to match Result: redbox.mov Applying this technique to a landscape was one of the major goals of this project, as it’s used heavily in modern post-production. Advantages - Faster than building the entire scene in “proper” 3D. - It’s easy. - More direct control over the piece, from an artist’s point of view.
PHASE 3 – Production See clip: How it was made
