Las civilizaciones antiguasde las Americas • How can you tell them apart? There are 3 main ancient civilizations in the Americas: the Aztecs, the Mayas and the Incas. Because these civilizations were located in very specific geographic regions This is how you can tell the difference when looking at photos of ruins:
Aztecas 1. Since they lived on the drier, windy altiplano (high plains) of Mexico, the Aztec pyramids are wide and flat on the top. 2. They aren’t as steep as the Mayan pyramids- they didn’t want to get blown off by the wind. 3. The surrounding land is dry or has sparse vegetation. 4. The most famous ruins are of Teotihaucan, outside of Mexico City
Mayas 1. Since they lived in the selva tropical/bosque lluvioso of Central America, the ruins are surrounded by lush vegetation. 2. The pyramids are steeper than the Aztec pyramids – they wanted to get up past the trees where it was cooler. 3. The pyramids have a little structure on the top 4. The most famous ruins are in Tikal, Guatemala
Incas Since the Incas lived in the Andes you will often see mountains or terraces in the pictures. The Incas didn’t build pyramids The outstanding feature of Inca architecture is that the huge stones fit perfectly together without mortar. Thick walls kept the people warm in the cold weather of the Andes The most famous ruins are of Machu Picchu in Peru
