  2. What is a Sentence? A group of words that tells a complete idea. • Every sentence has two parts: Predicate Subject

  3. Subject • usually contains more than just the noun • usually appears at the beginning of the sentence • A.K.A. the naming part of the sentence • tells who or what did something in the sentence

  4. Predicate • a word or group of words that tells something about the subject • usually contains more than just the verb • A.K.A. the action part of a sentence • tells what the subject did • usually appears at the end of a sentence

  5. The Three Bear’s Inn stays open all year. subject predicate The Three Bear’s Inn stays open all year. To find the subject, ask who or what is this sentence about? To find the predicate, ask what does the subject do?

  9. Statement • a sentence that tells something • it begins with a capital letter and ends with a period Goldilocks loves our breakfast. Your children will enjoy the Baby Bear Special. You can find three kinds of porridge on our menu.

  10. Question • a sentence that asks something • begins with a capital letter and ends with a question mark Do many families come to enjoy fall in the forest? Does Papa Bear lead nature walks through the forest? What time do you serve breakfast?

Command • a sentence that tells someone to do something • begins with a with a capital letter and usually ends with a period • some begin with the word please • The subject of a command is you it is not written , but understood • The predicate is usually the entire sentence Please put the dirty dishes in the sink. Help me clear the dishes from the table. Put on an apron, so your clothes won’t get dirty.

  12. Exclamation • used to express strong emotions or feelings like surprise, anger, or excitement • begins with a capital letter and ends with an exclamation point Oh no, you broke a glass! This porridge is too cold! This kitchen is a mess!

  13. Identify the type of sentence. Find the map of the United States. Command Louisiana is a state on the southern coast of the United States. Statement I found it all by myself! Exclamation Do you know where the Mississippi River begins? Question
