Emory Faculty & Staff • 3rd largest private employer in metro-Atlanta • 12,949 Employees (2011) • Faculty = 64% male, 75% above 40 yrs. , primarily white • Staff = 66% female, 60% above 40 yrs., white and African American • Faculty Staff Assistance Program (FSAP) • Substance abuse prevention education (panels and workshops) • Physician and nurse specific programs • Individual assessment with employee • Referral Services • Return-to-work conference • Aftercare Substance Abuse Recovery Support Group
College Campuses • 1 in 4 college students have illegally used prescription drugs (SAMHSA, 2009) • 18 – 22 yr. olds, full-time college students 2x more likely to use a stimulant for non-medical reasons (SAMSHA, 2009) • 13% of college students report using 1 or more prescription drugs not prescribed to them, in last 12 months (NCHA survey, fall 2011) • Common Beliefs: • Medications are safer than street drugs - FDA approved and prescribed by a doctor • It is the “norm” to share pills
Emory Students • 2 Colleges, 7 Graduate Schools • Undergrad + Graduate = 13,893 • Prescription Drug Use: self-report of drugs taken that were not prescribed to individual, NCHA survey, fall 2011, N = 1574 • Stimulants = 5.7% • Antidepressants = 1.9% • Pain Killers = 4.4% • Sedatives = 3.1% • Reasons for Use: self-report to substance abuse counselors • Self –medicating • Self – medicating + partying • Experimenting
