Context • 1.2 Billion People Earn Less Than $1/Day • Nearly 50% of World’s People Earn Less Than $2/Day • Rich/Poor Gap Doubles Every 40 Years • Life Expectancy • Children’s Health • Unemployment
Areas of Concern From an Engineering Perspective • Infrastructure • Water • Wastewater • Energy • Housing • Food Production • Product/Process Design – Job Creation
Water Statistics • Water Scarcity Exists in 26 Nations (350 Million) • By 2050 Water Scarcity Problems in 2/3 of Nations • Severe Water Quality Problems in 25% of World • 1 Billion people do not have access to safe water
Wastewater Statistics • ½ of the World has No Sanitation Facilities • Water-borne illness is the leading cause of childhood mortality • Less than 35 percent of cities in the developing world have their wastewater treated. • 75 percent of solid wastes are disposed of in open dumps
Electricity Statistics • Over 1 billion people without electric power • In over half of the developing countries, there is less than 1 telephone per 100 citizens
Housing Statistics • 1.1 billion people are living in inadequate housing conditions in urban areas alone worldwide • 21 million new housing units are required each year in developing countries to accommodate growth in the number of households during the period between 2000 and 2010 period.
The current problems are severe – The projected problems are MORE severe!
Income Statistics • Approximately 46% of the world earns $2/day or less • It is projected that 67% of the world will earn $2/day or less by the year 2030.

ABET Requirements More “holistic, but engineering-related” goals within ABET criterion:c) an ability to design a system, component, or process to meet desired needs within realistic constraints such as economic, environmental, social, political, ethical, health and safety, manufacturability, and sustainability h) the broad education necessary to understand the impact of engineering solutions in a global, economic, environmental, and societal context
ABET Requirements ” Broad, common” educational goals contained within ABET criterion:d) an ability to function on multi-disciplinary teams f) an understanding of professional and ethical responsibility g) an ability to communicate effectively i) a recognition of the need for, and an ability to engage in, life-long learning j) a knowledge of contemporary issues
