  1. The Agreement meets trade union requirements because... • It covers all the Core Conventions of the ILO. • It covers questions of Occupational Health and Safety • The Company undertakes to respect the national laws and regulations

  2. The Company undertakes to consult the union in the event of restructuring • Its suppliers are obliged to respect the agreement • There is a provision for a joint Committee to review issues affecting the company

  3. There is willingness to share information • Gives procedure to follow on grievance handling. • Gives provision for the monitoring and implementation of the Agreement. • All sides are committed to the well being of the environment and company productivity.

  4. The Agreement could be improved by: • Making it more general i.e. more representative in case the MNE expands or moves its operations to another country. • Stipulating a minimum wage. • Agreeing on grounds under which the Agreement can be terminated.

  5. Implementation .These agreements currently do not exist in our sectors/countries but we can start to educate our members on them as we are seeing more MNEs operating in Africa now.

  6. Multinationals • .In Namibia: South Africa Breweries, SUN International, Shoprite/Checkers, Ramatex, Unitrans, Coin Security • In South Africa: DAUN, Nien Hsing Coats, • In Uganda: Transami, Mears, Cresent, MTN, Celtel, Shoprite, Metro, Nandos, Steers, Supreme Furniture and Barnnets.

  7. The GUFs operating in Southern Africa have a forum where they meet annually and draw up a plan of action. The plan for 2002 to 2003 is to target MNE’s operating in the sub-region.
